Mods keep Fallout alive. Whether it’s new weapons, mechanical improvements, or DLC-sized experiences, the community’s love for the series is a big part of why we all keep returning to it. My personal favorite game is Fallout New Vegas, and while that’s the same for many of us, it’s been a while since I’ve had a reason to revisit the lights of The Strip. Game-changing mod Nuevo Mexico was going to bring me right back, but I’ve got bad news: the ambitious project has been canceled.

With the Fallout 5 release date years away, and the colossal Fallout London mod finally here, Bethesda’s RPG series has once again gone quiet. Fallout 76 and the Amazon series are still going strong, sure, but a new single-player game is a long way off. That’s why I’ve been incredibly excited by all the hugely ambitious mod projects in development, as each promises us a brand new take on the iconic post-apocalyptic world. Sadly, however, one of my most anticipated creations has just been canceled, leaving Fallout New Vegas without a transformative experience.

Nuevo Mexico, an upcoming DLC-sized Fallout New Vegas mod, is no more. Set just a few years after the original game, Nuevo Mexico was going to feature new voice acting, music, locations, quests, and more for us to explore. Sadly, however, this is no longer happening.

“After a lot of reflection, I’ve made the difficult decision to cancel Fallout Nuevo Mexico,” project lead ‘Zapshock’ writes. “This project has been my passion, my obsession, and a huge part of my life for years. I’ve poured thousands of hours into it, late nights, early mornings, and everything in between. I’ve met amazing people along the way, some who’ve become long-term friends and helped me grow and evolve into a better person. Some of the best moments of my life have been spent bringing this world to life, and I’ll always be proud of the work we accomplished.”

“But as much as I love this project, I need to prioritize my mental health and face reality. The team is small (less than 4), the workload enormous, and the costs ahead, both financial and personal, are too great. Continuing forward simply isn’t sustainable for me and everyone involved, including voice actors.

“Letting go of something you’ve poured your heart into is painful, but it’s necessary. These truly were my days of wine and roses, and I’ll always cherish them,” Zapshock continues.

“To everyone who supported this project, from the kind words, the feedback, the excitement, to just believing in what we were trying to create, thank you from the bottom of my heart. This message covers everything, so I kindly ask for your understanding.”

Last year Zapshock told the Nuevo Mexico community they were stepping away from active participation in the New Vegas mod, essentially putting the project on hiatus. Zapshock then returned to the mod’s Discord, and started posting announcements for it in late 2024. As of right now, however, Fallout Nuevo Mexico is dead.

While Fallout London managed to cross the finish line, many modding projects sadly don’t. Vault 13, a remake of the original Fallout built in Fallout 4, also recently “suspended” development. “This was not an easy decision, but we believe it is the right step at this stage of our journey,” project co-lead ‘culinwino’ wrote. “I know this may come as unexpected news, and we sincerely apologize for any disappointment it may cause.”
