The bulk of your time in Tails Of Iron 2: Whiskers Of Winter will be centered around tracking down and defeating large monsters. However, in the early stages of the game, many of your encounters during the main quest will be cut short, encouraging you to take on Beast Hunts, like Fear The Sky, if you want to finish your battle against these dangerous creatures.

Unlock Fire Elementa and recruit a new chef for Winter’s Edge.
Your introduction to Beast Hunts begins in The Outskirts, where you’ll find a handful of larger versions of enemies to track down. Bird Beasts and Backstabbers are two of the first larger beasts you’ll be tasked to hunt down, the latter of which we’ll cover in The Root Of The Problem.
How To Start The Root Of The Problem
Visit The Elder at Mossbug Farm in The Outskirts to take on The Root of the Problem, which will require you to hunt down a Backstabber in this early Beast Hunt.
Once you’ve accepted this task under the “Boss” tab, you’ll learn that the farmers found their crop destroyed and a trail of evidence leading to Backstabber Cave.
Traverse the map until you reach the upper left section or fast-travel to the Abandoned Shack if you’ve already explored the area.
You need two Wood Logs, two Stones, and six Gold to construct the fast travel point.
How To Defeat The Backstabber Mother
Once you’re there, continue left and brush aside the Backstabber Pups that block your way.
Arrive at the open field where you’ll encounter a Backstabber Mother lying in wait. Dodge her opening jump attack and exploit her weakness to poison weapons and Elementa.
After the Backstabber loses about 33 percent of its HP, it will flee into its cave to the left; you must pursue it.
Restock on berries to fill your potion vial along the way and use the save point here before venturing forward.
The merchant along the way sells a Polished Slither Scale Hammer, which is a helpful poison weapon for this fight if you don’t have one of your own.
How To Beat The Backstabber Mother Phase Two
Inside the cave, you’ll encounter the Backstabber Mother again, exactly where its HP was when it fled.
The Mother jumps up and slams its quill-lined back into the ground twice, so run to where it was standing to avoid the combo attack.
Once the Backstabber is done with its opening, you should fire a few ranged shots to put pressure on it.
Use your shield to block the quills it launches at you and use your dodge to avoid its unblockable rolling attack, indicated by red markers.
When the Backstabber stands still and the surrounding ground glows red, step back and avoid the electric damage it unleashes.
The best times to counterattack are during the electric attack using range or right after the rolling attack, giving you a few moments to hit it with melee weapons. After a few cycles, the Backstabber will go down.
Loot your prey, then interact with the marked spot in the center of the cave, revealing a small non-hostile Backstabber Pup, which Arlo sends out of the cave.
Escort the pup past the Mudwyrms outside and back to the entrance to Mossbug Farm
You can fast-travel back to the farm and meet the pup outside.
What Rewards Do You Get From The Root Of The Problem?
The Backstabber Pup is taken in by a farmer and crowned the new protector of the crops.
You’ll receive the following rewards at the end of your side quest:
- Rough Backstabber Crossbow
- Rough TH Backstabber Spear
- Rough Hunter Pauldron
