Doom mods represent an entire videogame genre unto themselves. From the quintessential Brutal Doom to the visionary My House, in the past 32 years, id Software’s seminal FPS has been expanded, remade, and transformed in about every way imaginable. Now, Doom has become a vessel for experiencing the future. Although the fantastic-looking Doom The Dark Ages doesn’t officially arrive until May, if you want to get a taste of the upcoming, hellish shooter, and take the new shotgun, Shield Saw, and plasma rifle for a spin, one Doom mod makes the pending sequel ‘playable’ today.
I got a close look at Doom The Dark Ages recently, and my verdict is that it fixes essentially every problem with Doom Eternal. The combat is simpler and cleaner, the fussy platforming sections seem to have been eliminated, and the story and lore have been cut back so that it moves along at a much faster clip. The Doom The Dark Ages release date is getting closer and I’m optimistic it will be one of the best FPS games I play all year. Frankly, I’m itching to get started. Enter stalwart Doom modder ‘duskredy.’
Using trailers, screenshots, and the details that have been shared so far, ‘Darkfall’ imports the Dark Ages experience into classic Doom. You get the guns, the Shield Saw, and some of the finer gameplay features, but all in the classic Doom Engine, with the maps from the 1993 original and its 1994 sequel. Some of the enemy models have been remade and you can even do glory kills. That tasty-looking Skullcrusher is also available.
Keep in mind that if you want to play Darkfall, you need to use the GZDoom client, which adds the vertical look option to the 1993 icon. Other than that, this is the best way to get a taste of The Dark Ages before it launches in spring. You can get Darkfall via duskredy’s own Discord, right here.
Alternatively, enjoy a little more nostalgia from the Doom age with the best old games, or maybe look ahead with the best upcoming PC games on their way in 2025.
