A leaker online has claimed that a collaboration between Halo and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 almost became a reality. The move would have seen tons of Halo content come to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, but it wasn’t to be.

Halo and Call of Duty are two titans of the FPS genre. Nowadays, Call of Duty is the more popular of the two, but Halo still has enormous name value for gamers. Thanks to Microsoft’s 2023 acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the company now owns both series, which would theoretically make it easier for any potential collaboration to happen.

According to Call of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope on X, Sledgehammer Games had plans for a big Halo collaboration in Modern Warfare 3. This would have included various maps from the Halo franchise, and while they did stop short of naming any specific maps, the image included shows Halo 3‘s The Pit. In terms of size, this could definitely make for a solid small-scale Call of Duty map. In a follow-up post, TheGhostOfHope claimed to believe that Microsoft shot down the idea, in the same way it did when Secret Level asked about a Halo x Doom crossover episode.

Although a Halo collaboration sounds a little out there, for Call of Duty, it isn’t at this point. The days of Call of Duty being a serious military shooter are long gone, with tons of purchasable cosmetics and frequent crossovers with other franchises. It’s true of the current game in the series, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and it was true of Modern Warfare 3, too. Perhaps the strangest in recent memory was when Call of Duty added Terrifier‘s Art the Clown as an Operator. While Microsoft may have vetoed a Halo collaboration for the time being, it doesn’t feel out of the realm of possibility that it could revisit the idea in the future.

Activision may have left Modern Warfare 3 behind at this point, but the fun continues with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. The latest game in the series has been receiving frequent content updates, with more crossovers and collaborations to take part in. The biggest so far was Squid Game, which had its own Premium Battle Pass to complete. Treyarch recently revealed the Season 2 Patch Notes for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, letting players know what they can expect when they hop into the action in the new Season.
