A Small But Rewarding Disney Dreamlight Valley Feature Should Be The Norm For Cozy Games

Cozy games such as Disney Dreamlight Valley often rely heavily on gathering and stockpiling resources – whether that be crops, foraged materials, fish, gemstones, or even insects or magic spell components. Resource gathering is a core element of most cozy games’ gameplay loop – but it can get a bit repetitive and frustrating at times, especially when seeking rare materials. Disney Dreamlight Valley uses an ingenious method of spicing up the gathering gameplay loop, a strategy that other cozy games should employ as well – its Bountiful and Critical Harvests.

Disney Dreamlight Valley’s Character Muting Trick Explained

Not every single character in Disney Dreamlight Valley is loved, and there’s a trick for players who wish they could mute certain villagers.

What Are Bountiful and Critical Harvests In Disney Dreamlight Valley?

When mining, fishing, picking crops, or gathering any sort of resources in Disney Dreamlight Valley, players have a slight chance of triggering a Critical Harvest. When this happens, several copies of the item will pop out and land in a small area around the player. These can be distinguished from normal items because they are surrounded by gold sparkles. The Critical Harvest is timed; players have a few seconds to gather as many items as possible before they disappear. The resource that spawns is typically the one the player was previously harvesting but, in the case of fish and gemstones, multiple different types can appear during a single Critical Harvest.

A Bountiful Harvest is a slightly different event that is most commonly seen when farming or foraging, and never occurs when fishing. When a Bountiful Harvest happens, a single spot or item – such as a bush, tree, individual crop, or Story Magic Snippet – glows gold for a limited period of time. While it is glowing, players can perform the “harvest” action multiple times to collect a large number of resources. In this case, the resource will almost always be the same one they were previously harvesting.

Bountiful And Critical Harvests Add A Sense Of Excitement

A Bountiful or Critical Harvest can happen at practically any time. This makes resource gathering in Disney Dreamlight Valley exciting, as players never know exactly when one might occur. The actual chance of such a harvest occurring is unknown, but is speculated to be slightly more frequent when a crop is planted in the same Biome where it is sold. Bountiful and Critical Harvests also encourage paying attention while foraging or farming, as otherwise a player might miss a key opportunity to score a few extra resources that might be necessary for completing a quest or Star Path duty.

Other cozy games do offer opportunities to break from the routine, such as using enriched soil and fertilizer in Stardew Valley or finding a rare seasonal fish or bug in Animal Crossing. However, none of these are quite equal in excitement levels to a vegetable suddenly glowing gold, or a pile of diamonds and other riches suddenly popping out of a single mining node. Cozy games looking to add a bit of flash and energy to the “daily grind” should look to Disney Dreamlight Valley‘s special harvest as the ideal example to follow.

Another Dreamlight Valley strategy that other games could adopt is the ability to assign roles – such as Fishing, Timebending, or Foraging – to villagers. Spending time with these villagers earns the player bonus items when performing their assigned task. The number of bonus items can increase depending on how many villagers are assigned to a role, something which becomes particularly valuable as more and more characters move to the Valley. This both lets players harvest resources faster and encourages them to develop their relationships with NPCs by always having one at their side whether they are planting crops, picking berries, or mining for gems.
