Pokemon TCG: The 7 Most Valuable Japanese Cards Released in 2024

2024’s best Japanese cards are worth a small fortune.

With these incredibly cool cards, as well as the return of Illustration Rare cards, there’s going to be plenty of chase cards for collectors. If you’ve pulled a fancy-looking card and want to see how it ranks across all the cards in the set, we gathered the most valuable cards together in one place.

These prices all come from TCGplayer’s Market Value and are subject to change over time.

Updated January 19, 2025, by Andrew Scariati: The best Temporal Forces chase cards follow the upward trend that many modern cards enjoyed in late 2024 and early 2025. While many of Temporal Forces’ best cards remain on this list, the order has shifted massively, as there’s a new card in the top spot.

12

Deerling – Illustration Rare

Market Price: $19.24

The Temporal Forces Deerling Illustration Rare from the Pokemon TCG.

Deerling had a modest start, as this buffet of beautiful colors could once be had for under five dollars. However, as Temporal Forces begins to rise in value along with many other modern cards, this Deerling has seen a massive jump in value, quadrupling to hover around the $20 mark.

While it’s difficult to say if this card’s rise is due to the strong bull market modern cards are enjoying or if it has long-term staying power, there’s no arguing that Deerling features some of the most unique art in Temporal Forces, equaled only by its evolution.

11

Iron Boulder ex – Special Illustration Rare

Market Price: $19.94

Iron Boulder ex by nagimiso in the Pokemon TCG.

Next up we have the Special Illustration Rare Iron Boulder ex card. This Fighting type Pokemon is a powerhouse that comes with some equally impressive artwork. Its first attack, Repulsor Axe, deals 60 damage for just two Energy, which isn’t a bad trade off, but it also sets up a delayed trigger that goes into effect if Iron Boulder ex would take damage on your opponent’s next turn.

If they deal damage through an attack, and even if they knock out Iron Boulder ex, you get to put eight damage counters on the Pokemon that damages it. This is an impressive deterrent, threatening a total of 140 damage over the course of two turns if your opponent goes to attack.

10

Gengar ex – Ultra Rare

Market Price: $22.45

The Temporal Forces Gengar ex Ultra Rare from the Pokemon TCG.

Gengar has long been beloved as one of the most consistently valuable Pokemon in the TCG, as evidenced by its roster of immensely valuable cards. While this Ultra Rare features some of the simplest artwork of all the expensive Temporal Forces chase cards, sometimes less is more when it comes to great designs.

When it was released, this Gengar bounced up and down around the $15 mark but has since found enough momentum to push it above $20. We rarely see Gengar with the complementary red background this card boasts, and matching the color in its eyes is an excellent bonus that makes this card stand out.

9

Sawsbuck – Illustration Rare

Market Price: $25.73

The Temporal Forces Sawsbuck Illustration Rare from the Pokemon TCG.

Only one card shares the majesty of the Deerling IR, and unsurprisingly, that’s its evolution, Sawsbuck. While Sawsbuck and Deerling aren’t particularly popular Pokemon, their Illustration Rares claim impressive spots among the most valuable Temporal Forces chase cards thanks to their unusual designs.

In the games, these Pokemon feature different colors on their bodies depending on what season it is, and this artwork perfectly embodies that unique quality thanks to the four bright shades used to symbolize the changing seasons. Sawsbuck jumped from under ten dollars to almost $25, and it’s showing little sign of slowing down soon.

8

Bianca’s Devotion – Special Illustration Rare

Market Price: $28.79

Bianca's Devotion by Cona Nitanda in the Pokemon TCG.

Another Special Illustration Rare Trainer card, Bianca’s Devotion is both a powerful healing card and a fantastic piece of art that collectors will love. Bianca’s Devotion heals all damage from one of your Pokemon so long as it has 30 or less HP left, giving you a narrow window to use it, but also potentially saving a powerful Pokemon from being Knocked Out.

The artwork features this Pokemon Black and White rival passed out in the setting sun, with her Musharna gently caring for her dreams while she sleeps.

7

Iron Leaves ex – Special Illustration Rare

Market Price: $36.83

Iron Leaves ex by nagimiso in the Pokemon TCG.

Joining Walking Wake as one of the main faces of the set, Iron Leaves gets an ex card featuring the Future Paradox Pokemon seemingly traversing an alien world with a massive, foreign moon behind it.

You can then deal a solid 180 damage with its Prism Edge attack, though it can’t attack its next turn if you use it. If you have an engine to keep swapping out your Pokemon and reliably bouncing them back to your hand, you can set up a pretty nice damage cycle with relatively few cards.

6

Morty’s Conviction – Special Illustration Rare

Market Price: $38.12

Morty's Conviction by Megumi Mizutani in the Pokemon TCG.

A fascinating draw spell that plays on your opponent’s board state, Morty’s Conviction isn’t a great card to play early on in the game. In fact, under the wrong circumstances, you can end up with a negative card advantage if you aren’t careful.

You have to discard a card from your hand as an extra cost to playing Morty’s Conviction, but in exchange, you get to draw a card for each of your Opponent’s Benched Pokemon. At most, you’re going to be drawing five cards, which isn’t bad all things considered.

5

Gastly – Illustration Rare

Market Price: $38.84

The Temporal Forces Gastly Illustration Rare from the Pokemon TCG.

Say what you will about this Gastly card and how you interpret the scene depicted, but any card that features Gengar on it is bound to get attention – just look at Morty’s Conviction. Despite being categorized as an Illustration Rare, this card has all the details and a host of friends to earn it consideration as an honorary SIR.

Gastly’s price chart thus far tells the tale of a card that has seen huge spikes due to hype and cooled off when other cards drew collectors’ attention away. However, Gastly won’t go away, as it blew past previous highs in the $25 range to jump into the high-30s.

4

Gouging Fire ex – Special Illustration Rare

Market Price: $49.50

Gouging Fire ex by Teeziro in the Pokemon TCG.

One of the coolest looking Special Illustration cards out there, Gouging Fire ex not only has a stunning look into what Entei’s ancient ancestor might look like but also comes with a beastly attack that you can use over and over again with a few extra steps.

Blaze Blitz is an exceptionally powerful attack, capable of knocking out plenty of Basic and Stage 1 Pokemon by dealing 260 damage with one attack. Even though it has the drawback of not being able to use the attack again until it leaves and reenters the Active Spot, you can use cards like Prime Catcher to reset it for free.

3

Iron Crown ex – Special Illustration Rare

Market Price: $61.71

Iron Crown ex by Nagimiso

Pokemon takes on the Vaporwave aesthetic with the Future Pokemon Iron Crown ex’s Special Illustration Rare card. Not only does it feature some amazing artwork, but it also slots right into any deck that has an Ancient theme.

Iron Crown ex’s ability, Cobalt Command, boosts your Future Paradox Pokemon’s attacks by a respectable 20 points of damage, though it doesn’t affect itself. This ability stacks too, so if you have multiples out in play, you will deal 20 bonus damage for each Iron Crown ex in play.

2

Walking Wake ex – Special Illustration Rare

Market Price: $62.83

Walking Wake ex by Teeziro in the Pokemon TCG.

Another fantastic Special Illustration Rare, Walking Wake gets its time in the spotlight with Temporal Forces. With its special ability, Azure Wave, your opponents can’t do anything to get around or ignore the damage that Walking Wake ex deals, making sure that all your attacks hit.

It will deal 120 damage with Cathartic Roar, doubling that damage if your opponent’s Active Pokemon has a Special Condition like Confused or Poison. Keep up the pressure with cards that can put status effects on your opponent’s Pokemon and set them up for a 1-2 punch with Walking Wake ex.

1

Raging Bolt ex – Special Illustration Rare

Market Price: $94.81

Raging Bolt ex by Teeziro in the Pokemon TCG.

This Ancient Pokemon has two exceptionally powerful attacks along with a stunning Special Illustration Rare to make it a chase card from Temporal Forces. Raging Bolt ex’s first attack, Bursting Roar, has you discarding your hand to draw a new six cards, which is solid in a pinch.

This stunning SIR earns its place as the most valuable Raging Bolt card thus far thanks to the gorgeous scene depicted here. While all of the Paradox Pokemon in this set feature beautiful natural environments, few have the blend of colors and excellent lighting that this Raging Bolt ex boasts.
