For me it’s straightforward. The worst Resident Evil games are RE5, Resident Evil 7, Village, and RE Zero. But I’ll concede that I’m an outlier, the kind of edge case who thinks that the remake of Resident Evil 3 is better than the 1999 original. For most fans of Capcom’s survival horror series, the most difficult-to-love game is, and perhaps always will be, Resident Evil 6. Perhaps its reputation has thawed in recent years, and I think we can broadly agree that at least the Leon Kennedy section is good. Nevertheless, new evidence means there’s reason to believe that RE6 is coming back.
If Resident Evil 4 tipped the series’ scales away from horror games and towards action, and RE5 held them in place, Resident Evil 6 stamped a great, military-issue boot on one end while firing akimbo VP70s into the air. It’s noisy, long (as well as Leon, there are campaigns starring Chris Redfield, Sherry Birkin, and Ada Wong), and the body count is higher than perhaps every other Resident Evil game combined.
Originally released in 2012, Resident Evil 6 is a bulging, writhing bag of ideas, laudable for its maximalism, regrettable for how often it devolves into directionless wave-defense sections. Like it or not, there’s reason to believe RE6 is getting a relaunch.
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has a fresh listing for Resident Evil 6, which says that a dedicated version of the game may be coming for the current, Xbox Series line of consoles. There are also individual Xbox Series listings for Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil 4 (presumably the original game, rather than the remake), and Resident Evil Origins, which combines the remake of RE1 and Resident Evil Zero into a single bundle.
Though this certainly hints at a current-gen relaunch for RE6 and the others, it’s not currently clear if there are plans for similar releases on PC. Resident Evil 6 arrived on Steam in 2013, alongside an extra difficulty for the Mercenaries mode. Resident Evil Origins, RE7, and RE4 are also all available on PC, but whether the editions that are available currently will be replaced remains to be seen. It wouldn’t be unprecedented. The legacy versions of Doom and Doom 2 were exchanged last year for the upgraded combination pack, for example.
