Escape From Tarkov is still the first game that leaps to mind when you think of extraction shooters, and Battlefield – especially the superlative Battlefield 3 – has the best reputation in terms of sheer scale. But as Delta Force Season Two arrives on Steam, it’s clear that the competition for PC’s favorite tactical war shooter has a credible new contender. Multiplayer FPS games often have a short lifespan. Spectre Divide, Battlebit, and even The Finals have struggled to maintain an enthusiastic player base. But Delta Force seemingly has staying power, and it’s just hit a new Steam record.
Delta Force Season Two, also known as Starfall, introduces a new operator, two new maps, and a 3v3v3 mode. It arrived on Saturday January 18, and since then, the FPS game has climbed to unprecedented heights on Steam. Tarkov has the tactics, the weight, the gravitas. Battlefield is more about playability and pace, an easy-to-use shooter that nevertheless boasts a realistic audio and visual style. Delta Force falls somewhere in between the two. Combine that with the fact it’s a completely free Steam game, and its current success isn’t hard to explain.
Originally released back in December, as of yesterday, Sunday January 19, Delta Force has hit a new simultaneous player record. 131,264 people logged in at once to sample Season Two – as of this writing, a day later, 104,114 people are still actively playing Delta Force together.
For comparison, Delta Force can now claim a higher simultaneous player record than The Division (114,000), Battlefield 2042 (107,000), and even the monolithic, original version of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (112,000).
As for the rest of 2025, developer Team Jade has already shared its expansive plans for Delta Force’s near future. However, the long-awaited Black Hawk Down campaign mode has been delayed. Nevertheless, if you want to sample the FPS for yourself, just head here.
