Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is about to wrap its theatrical run – and a very successful run at that. We’re in for a long wait until we get a sequel, as Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is set to be with us sometime in 2027, but we might already know what this next film will be about.
For starters, the post-credits scenes give us some clues. In the first one, we’re introduced to Metal Sonic(s) and Amy Rose. Then, the final one confirms that Shadow is still alive after the events of Sonic 3. Now, we might have a better idea of how this all ties in together, thanks to some concept art for the third film.
Could Sonic 4 introduce Metal Sonic as part of a bad future?
This comes to us courtesy of Tacit Sign Studio, who also worked on the first film. Their work was shared on the Chinese social media site Weibo but has since been deleted, although not before Sonic fans shared the images online.
It seems that many of the scenes depicted in the artwork made it into the final film. However, there’s a very notable example that didn’t: the one that shows Eggman as a ruler, with Metal Sonic at his side. In fact, Eggman’s story doesn’t revolve around this at all in Sonic 3, as it instead focuses on his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, and Shadow.
While this is just a guess at this point, it’s possible that this is concept art for Sonic 3’s post-credits scene, which eventually went unused. If so, we might be seeing a glimpse at a bad future here, in which Eggman wins by defeating Sonic with Metal Sonic. To dive into this further, Eggman might have sent the army of Metal Sonics back in time to defeat his nemesis, while Amy has come back to stop this from happening, Terminator-style.
The concept art for Amy certainly backs this up, as the background looks completely industrialised.
That might sound a little far-fetched, but it would be in the spirit of Sonic CD, the game that first introduced Amy and Metal Sonic. Here, we had a time-travelling mechanic, where doing certain things in a level could send you to a good or bad future. So, this would be a great way to be influenced by the source material, while still giving Amy more to do than just stand around and get kidnapped.

As for why this went unused, that can be explained too – the writers don’t know if Jim Carrey will reprise his role as Eggman. Carrey is considering it, but Sonic 3 was written to give him an out if he doesn’t, in which case Metal Sonic might get a different origin story.
In any case, Sonic 3 is still in theatres. It will launch digitally on January 21.
