Hi-Rez Studios has introduced a seasonal content model to Smite 2 that offers free and premium reward pages to progress through. Live service games are regularly innovating on how to distribute content to their communities, and Smite 2 has made one major change.
Since its 2014 release, Smite has garnered a huge following of MOBA fans thanks to its distinction from others like League of Legends or DOTA 2. Unlike the top-down perspective of LoL and DOTA 2, Hi-Rez Studio’s MOBA offered an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective that put players on the battlefield. Smite 2 effectively replaced the initial game when its closed alpha testing began in May 2024, and its open beta started on January 14. In the beta, players can access 45 playable gods, the Joust map, and the alpha test of Assault mode. Smite 2 has significantly adjusted its content release style in its open beta, drawing inspiration from other successful live services like Helldivers 2 and Marvel Rivals.

Marvel Rivals’ Approach to One Feature is Something Overwatch 2 Desperately Needs
Though Overwatch 2 is focusing on its PvP experience, there’s still potential to expand on the lore by borrowing a feature from Marvel Rivals.
The Smite 2 Steam page’s featured news was recently updated to highlight the new seasonal system for its content moving forward. According to the post, players can earn XP and Coins by completing quests and daily challenges. The Coins are a currency used in a seasonal collection, with themed collections released every eight weeks. Multiple collections will be available at one time in the Wandering Market, and Hi-Rez has confirmed that players can move on to a new one before finishing the first one. Each collection includes four pages of content, with the first page offered for free, and subsequent pages part of a premium track. Free-to-play Smite 2 gamers will unlock Diamonds, another currency used in the in-game shop, skins, and other cosmetics, while the premium pass is more lucrative.
Smite 2 Shares Seasonal Content Plans With a Focus on Poseidon
Each Smith 2 collection features one unique skin per page, with the highlighted one being Hot Stuff Poseidon, which replaces the Greek God with a bottle of hot sauce carrying a red pitchfork. As players use Coins to unlock the content on each page, they can decide which cosmetics they’d like to focus on, similar to when Fortnite introduced Battle Stars. If a player decides they don’t like what one collection offers, they can save their Coins for a future one until they hit a limit. Hi-Rez Studio has also confirmed that there’s no planned conclusion for any collection, and players can return to older ones, which may suggest they’re permanent, similar to Helldivers 2‘s battle pass.
While it had successful collaborations with IPs like Avatar: The Last Airbender and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Smite 2‘s predecessor didn’t follow a structured seasonal content model. This fresh change to the newly released open beta may be ideal for fans who haven’t jumped to the sequel yet. As Hi-Rez Studio continues to update Smite 2, there may be further adjustments to the cosmetics and progression systems.
