Every time you think the world is done with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the 13-year-old game finds a way to be relevant again. Whether it’s thanks to a new edition, an anniversary of one of these many editions, a mod, or just good old nostalgia. This time, however, Skyrim’s player count skyrocketed, almost to its highest ever, thanks to a Steam sale.

We’re gonna be talking about this game for a decade and more.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition is currently 90 percent off on Steam, dropping its $39.99 price tag to a ridiculously low $3.99. This has resulted in a lot of players, new and old, flocking to Skyrim to either relive the legend of the Dragonborn or see what all the fuss is about. So many played the game that it almost reached a historic player count.
Skyrim Almost Breaks Eight-Year-Old Record
As of yesterday, the peak 24-hour player count for Skyrim was 67,622, according to SteamDB. That’s only a few thousands away from the all-time peak of 69,906, which was set around the time that the Special Edition was released. As of the time of writing, the current concurrent player count for the game is 35,253.
On the off chance that you haven’t ever played Skyrim, the Special Edition is the best way to experience the game. However, its discounted $3.99 price will only last till January 20, so today is your last chance to claim it for this historically low price. If not, though, it’s bound to go on sale again at some point or another.
One of Skyrim’s most memorable quests was the one that gives you the ability to turn into a werewolf. However, it seems that werewolves were almost going to be scrapped from the game entirely. Bethesda wasn’t happy with the earlier renditions of the werewolf models and considered cutting them entirely.
It seems the original versions were simply human models with dog heads and hair on them. However, after a few more iterations, the team was finally on board with the version of the werewolves we see in the game.
