Similar to Fall Guys yet much different

In this Squid Game: Unleashed review, I will share my impressions of this game based on the popular series and provide an honest opinion.

For this review, I played Squid Game: Unleashed on Motorola G32 (Android) racking up a total of 15 hours of playtime. This allowed me to fully explore and experience everything that the game has to offer, providing me with a solid foundation for a thorough analysis.

Challenging yet enjoyable gameplay, albeit quite similar to Fall Guys

Starting with the review, let’s dive into the gameplay experience of Squid Game: Unleashed. Truth be told, the first match or two feel like you are playing against bots, but the difficulty increases quickly. With increasingly challenging minigames and good players, you will get the thrill real quick, with gore and violence, although quite less as compared to the original series.

The gameplay is quite similar to Fall Guys but with a dark twist and unpleasant theme. Unlike the cheerful and adorable Fall Guys, this game incorporates gore and unsettling elements to stay true to the series. It is essentially a party game, where you can compete against 31 players across three challenging minigames, to win the match and earn a huge amount of virtual cash.

While the game captures many aspects of the original series, it falls short in many areas. For instance, in the Glass Bridge minigame, you can respawn even after falling to your death and continue your race, which isn’t the case for the series.

That being said, I am not undermining the gameplay, and I enjoyed playing it. The variety of mini-games is quite nice, and I have lost too many matches if I have to be honest. I like that this game is more challenging than Fall Guys, or maybe it’s just me who has lost his touch. In this game, you can also use skills to gain an advantage or slow down your opponents.

Anyway, you will get to enjoy some of the iconic games from the series, some with added variations, and new games inspired by our childhood activities. The replayability factor is also not that bad, but it can surely improve. This is a nice game for people who love Squid Game and Fall Guys.

The lack of a storyline and narrative reduces the game’s impact and immersiveness

While there are dossiers for all the in-game characters, including both original characters from the series and new additions just for the game, you won’t find any storyline or story-driven content. This makes it a bad adaptation, especially since the immersive story was a key factor in why the series became a massive hit.

The gameplay itself is fine, but the developers could have worked towards more story-driven elements or content to elevate the experience, allowing the fans to connect more with the game. As it is right now, it is an adaptation of Squid Game but not the Squid Game everyone loves.

Unfortunately, optimization issues can hinder your chances of survival in the game

One major drawback of this game is its poor optimization. On paper, it doesn’t come as a heavy game, but it doesn’t even work on low-end devices that are capable of running high-end games in low FPS. The development team should work towards this, as there are a lot of Squid Game fans, and not everyone can afford a high-end device. Even people with mid-end devices are having issues while playing the game, which shouldn’t be the case. This is particularly disappointing, considering it is a game related to such a big name.

Good visuals paired with audio that matches the game’s vibe

The game offers good visuals, wouldn’t say it’s the best but it does the job well enough. But I must say that it isn’t as appealing as Fall Guy’s visuals. While Squid Game: Unleashed also has cartoony-style visuals it still showcases the gore elements of the series, during the elimination moment and such very nicely. Considering how big and popular the series is, the visuals and character models could have been more polished and visually impactful.

On the other hand, the soundtrack and audio elements are truly impressive. From the commentary before the start of the match to the gunshot sounds, everything perfectly captures the vibe of the series. The devs have done a great job in the audio department.

Squid Game: Unleashed offers smooth and simple UI, along with decent controls

When it comes to the user interface and controls, the game provides a smooth and simple UI, which helps in enhancing your gameplay experience. The UI looks tacky but it is easy to understand with minimal clutter and nicely organized features. The large icons and decent font sizes make it very functional.

Even the controls are good and very simple, relying only on two main buttons to work with, with a third button appearing only when you use your ability or pick a weapon. While the controls are generally fine, they are not that smooth at times, at least for me. That said, you won’t face many issues in your matches with these minor insignificances.

The game fails to match the show’s thrill and hype

I enjoy the gameplay, the visuals, the characters and their abilities, and everything else, but I still don’t see it as a true adaptation of Squid Game. While it is great, that the devs want everyone to enjoy the game, including those who have not watched the series yet, it shouldn’t have been this way.

It is an adaptation of Netflix’s most-watched series to date, and despite featuring children’s games with a dark twist or spin, it fails to capture the horror, uneasiness, and dystopian elements of the original series. Even you will feel the same, once you try out the game that it is more like a Fall Guys clone with a Squid Game theme, rather than a proper recreation of the series.

What they could have done or can do is introduce an additional mode, where fans can connect more with the series through the game. This game has potential, and if they can just tap into the success of their thrilling and immersive narrative, they can make it more enjoyable and authentic.

For instance, they can add more elements from the series to the gameplay, adding permanent elimination mechanics in games like Red Light, Green Light, improving the stakes, and being closer to the show’s core concept. People loved Squid Game, because of its story, its intense atmosphere, and the high-stakes elimination when the players failed during the games. This isn’t the case for this game, as none of this tension or high-stakes moments are available.

You don’t need IAPs to survive in the field

Although the game features a Store, it is completely free of in-app purchases. So, you don’t have any expenses other than your Netflix Subscription. The store offers a variety of items, including Character Tokens, Outfits, and Emotes, with varying rarities.

One of the best aspects of the game is that you can buy all the in-game items with Virtual Cash, which you earn by playing the game. That being said, you will have to grind a lot, as some items cost a lot of virtual cash.

Final Verdict

Squid Game: Unleashed is a nice game with some room for improvement from the developer’s side. It offers cool features like character customizations, 32-player tournaments, spectator mode, virtual prize money, and more. While I encountered some network issues, I still enjoyed the game, especially as a fan of Fall Guys. If you enjoy playing that game, you are gonna have fun with this one too.

Even with the cartoony visuals, it still portrays the thrills and horrors of the original series, although I won’t say it is a great adaptation. Moreover, the game has pretty bad optimization, and even though it doesn’t appear as a resource-heavy game, it doesn’t run on low-end devices, which is a bummer. However, I would recommend that you try it for yourself, and see how you feel about the game.
