Roblox Ends Windows 7 Support

Summary

  • Roblox has officially ended support for the beloved game creation platform on Windows 7 devices, sunsetting the game on older operating systems.
  • Roblox’s sunsetting of Windows 7 support follows suit with several other games and game platforms ending support recently for older versions of Windows.
  • Roblox has continued to expand its reach through collaborations with major brands and franchises like One Piece, My Hero Academia, and Payday.

Fans are discovering that Roblox has officially ended support for versions of the game running on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 hardware. Since its initial launch in 2006, the online game platform has exploded in popularity and become one of the most popular gaming and game creation platforms in the world. Roblox boasts a staggering player base of well over 100 million players worldwide, with some studies suggesting that more than half of American children play the game regularly. Now, a small subset of players is losing access to the beloved game platform.

While Roblox originally debuted as a PC-exclusive game creation platform, the game has been brought to several consoles and other devices throughout recent years. Roblox made the jump to iOS and Android in the early 2010s, with a VR version even becoming available for the Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro in 2023. Roblox made waves in late 2023 as well when the gaming platform finally launched on PlayStation consoles, with Roblox releasing for both PS4 and PS5 in October 2023. A new update, however, will remove access to the game for a shrinking group of players.

A recent post shared by Reddit user Tailsgenesis on the official Roblox subreddit confirms the platform has been sunsetted on Windows 7. The post serves as a memorial for the game platform’s support on Windows 7, dating back more than a decade to the release of Roblox on Windows 7 in 2009. The Windows 7 shutdown of Roblox joins the previously sunsetted Windows 8 version, with Windows 8.1 support confirmed to also have been shuttered. Support for the Windows 7 version of Roblox was set to officially end on January 16.

Roblox Ends Support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1

While Roblox‘s end of support for the game’s Windows 7 version will be a sad moment for some fans, its inevitable end should be far from unexpected. Several games have begun to sunset their support for older versions of Windows, with Rockstar shuttering the Rockstar Games Launcher on Windows 7 in early 2024. Microsoft itself began to end its updates for Windows 7 platforms in 2022, with the operating system no longer receiving new security updates or supporting Microsoft 365.

The end of Roblox‘s support on Windows 7 comes as the game platform has continued to expand its reach throughout the past few years. Roblox has seen multiple recent officially-licensed game experiences debut within the platform, including One Piece Grand Arena as a collaboration with Toei and Eiichiro Oda. Other popular franchises like My Hero Academia and Payday have also introduced their own licensed games within Roblox as well, often partnering with Roblox creators. Roblox fans will say goodbye to the game’s Windows 7 and 8 versions as the game approaches its 20th anniversary next year.
