A Pokemon fan is impressing the internet with a detailed animatronic Caterpie that wiggles like the real thing. The original Pokemon games introduced players to 151 elementally-powered creatures they could collect and train, with many of them being directly inspired by real-world animals and insects. One such case is Caterpie, a caterpillar-like Worm Pokemon that evolves into the cocoon Metapod before emerging as the elegant Butterfree.

Caterpie remains quite popular among Pokemon fans, especially since the insect was featured in an emotional and memorable story arc during the first season of the Pokemon anime series. Players have made plenty of inspired artwork featuring Caterpie and its evolutions by reimagining their designs, fusing Caterpie with other beloved Generation 1 Pokemon, and even baking delicious pies themed after the Worm Pokemon.

A skilled YouTube user and animatronic maker by the handle of Officer Granite has been making robotic versions of classic Generation 1 Pokemon, with their latest creation being a 3D-printed version of Caterpie. As shown in a short video posted on Officer Granite’s YouTube channel, this mechanical Caterpie can move its head and tail, replicating the caterpillar’s wiggling movement in the games and anime. A few other YouTube users have complimented Officer Granite’s skills, though the creator admits that they didn’t put Caterpie’s leg stubs in the right places for it to stand on its own as it was designed to be carried around.

Animatronic Caterpie Crawls Its Way Into Pokemon Fans’ Hearts

As noted before, Officer Granite has created animatronics of other Generation 1 Pokemon, such as a Kabuto that moves its legs, a Pidgey that rotates its head around like a real bird while perched on its owner’s arm, and a Magnemite that spins its magnets. They’ve also made videos of themselves with their animatronics, in which they play the role of a park ranger in Pokemon Red and Blue’s Viridian Forest.

Officer Granite is just one of many gamers who grew up with the original Pokemon Red and Blue, which have spawned a massive franchise spanning games, television, and other media. There have been multiple new Pokemon generations released since the series’ humble beginnings, with each one adding new creatures and evolutions for players to catch and collect. Even as gamers keep wondering what the next generation of Pokemon will bring, they still pay tribute to classic monsters like Caterpie and its evolutionary line through drawings, sculptures, and even animatronics that capture the Worm Pokemon’s movements and personality.
