James Doakes was one of the few characters in the original series who saw Dexter for who he was: a killer. Erik King portrayed the feisty Miami Metro Homicide detective in the first two seasons, before he was killed off in dramatic fashion. However, this might not be the last time fans get to see the character, as Original Sin‘s 90s timeline has paved the way for the return of younger versions of multiple dead characters like Debra Morgan, Maria LaGuerta and, of course, Harry Morgan. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Original Sin‘s showrunner, Clyde Phillips, was asked if James Doakes might return at some point:
I think that’s the most powerful presence, who saw through Dexter, or at least looked at Dexter and saw something else that no one else saw. That Dexter wasn’t as blended in as he thinks. That whole, “I’m watching you, mother f****r!” I can’t tell you when that will happen, but to answer your question, that’s probably the most exciting thing that has to happen.
This is a surprisingly direct answer to a question that has been on the minds of many fans ever since it was announced that a Dexter prequel series was in the works. Doakes didn’t work at Miami Metro in 1991, so the characters ‘no show’ so far is not a ‘surprise mother f****r moment! As Phillips states, ‘it has to happen’ at some point, but it could be a few years away yet.
Doakes Could Turn Up Before Actually Joining The Ranks Of Miami Metro Homicide
If the Dexter prequel series runs as long as the original show, Doakes’ return could be saved for the latter part of the story. However, fans don’t want to wait too long to witness the first meeting between Dexter and the future thorn in his side. According to the timeline established in Dexter, James Doakes joined Miami Metro in 1997, and Original Sin‘s first season is set over the course of two weeks in 1991. Doakes arrival seems a long way off, unless Original Sin has a huge time jump. However, this doesn’t mean that Doakes can’t turn up before he becomes officially employed by Miami Metro. It is known that Maria LaGuerta and Doakes had a history with each other, and this could have begun prior to working together. Doakes was in the special forces, but he might have assisted Miami Metro with a case between 1991 and 1997.
If this is the way Doakes is brought into the fold in Original Sin, it probably means he’ll be utilized in a guest role. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as long as it doesn’t come off as cheap fan service. Doakes’ appearance in Original Sin has to make sense to the story, otherwise, it might be best to save him for the final season. Doakes is a character who is bound to be mentioned in the sequel series, Resurrection, now that Dexter Morgan has been outed as the real Bay Harbor Butcher. Doakes will likely be posthumously exonerated of the crimes, and a storyline involving a young Doakes in Original Sin would dovetail nicely with the events in the current timeline.
