I love finding, playing, and sharing videogames that involve ancient history. Whether it’s sailing the seas of the Aegean in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, making tactical decisions in Total War, or even getting to know the Greek gods in Hades, there are a lot of ways to explore reinterpretations of the past. Today, another contender joins the fold. Yield! Fall of Rome combines quick thinking and strategy on a scale that rivals even Civilization, and it’s available on Steam now.
Yield! Fall of Rome positions itself as a much faster 4X game than its contemporaries. The decisions and mechanics the genre is known for have been streamlined, meaning every turn is filled with impactful choices. If you still want to manage your empire but could do without the endless grind, Yield! Fall of Rome is all about faster, leaner, and more bitesize sessions.
Set during the final decades of the Roman Empire, you take control of one of eight factions vying for control as the most powerful civilization of the time starts to crumble. Each faction has its own unique units, buildings, strengths, and weaknesses, but the goal is always the same – expand and conquer.
Factions also have their own individual campaigns (although this is limited during the early access launch), and you can choose how you interact with Rome in every single one. Perhaps you’ll form a tenuous alliance and adapt to parts of Roman culture, or maybe you’ll take the might of the empire’s legions head-on. This is what I love about Yield’s approach. Instead of trying to save Rome, your civilization exists alongside it, using cunning and strategy to propel itself to new heights while the empire falls.
According to Yield! Fall of Rome’s Steam page, there’s an expansive roadmap following the first few months after launch. You can expect several new campaigns and factions, even more buildings and units, and even a custom co-op map editor.
Billionworlds has made Yield! Fall of Rome available in Steam Early Access starting now, so you can check the game out for yourself. Simply head here.
