Nidhogg Fight Walkthrough

Nidhogg prepared for battle at the Steps of Faith in Final Fantasy 14.

This fight is divided into four distinct phases. Different mechanics will appear in each phase, which we’ve detailed below.

Phase 1

During the first phase, Nidhogg will use the following attacks and mechanics.

Attack Name

Type

Details

Deafening Bellow

Roomwide AoE

Deals unavoidable damage to the whole party. Use AoE healing to recover.

Horrid Roar

Circle AoEs

Lines will appear below random players, which will quickly open up into circular eyes that deal damage. When the line appears, move out of the way to avoid this attack.

Hot Wing

Line AoEs

Deals damage in two large line AoEs to either side of Nidhogg. Stay in the center safe area to avoid these.

The Scarlet Whisper

Conal AoE

Deals untelegraphed damage in a cone to the front of the boss. The Tank should face Nidhogg away from the rest of the party.

Cauterize

Line AoE

Nidhogg will become untargetable and fly away before creating Horrid Roar AoEs on several players. Then, he will prepare a line AoE down the center of the arena. Dodge Horrid Roar, then move to either side to avoid Cauterize. Nidhogg will land with Touchdown, dealing damage in the area, before the fight resumes like normal.

At around 70 percent health remaining, Nidhogg will become untargetable and summon three enemies as the fight moves to its second phase.

Phase 2

This is an add phase in which you will have to fight a Shadow Brobinyak, Shadow Dragon, and Shadow Falak. The Shadow Dragon can’t be tanked and will move around randomly attacking players with a sweep attack that inflicts Damage Down. The Shadow Dragon should be your first target as each Tank grabs one of the other two adds and separates them.

The Shadow Brobinyak and Shadow Falak each have breath attacks that deal damage in an AoE to their front, so take care not to walk in front of the enemies as you take them out.

Focus down the Shadow Dragon first, followed by the Brobinyak and Falak. Once all three are defeated, Nidhogg will use Final Chorus, dealing damage to all players and transitioning the fight into phase three.

Phase 3

In this phase, Nidhogg will take the form of Estinien, and use a new set of attacks, which are detailed below.

Attack Name

Type

Details

Ala Morn

Tankbuster

Deals high damage to the main Tank. Use defensive cooldowns to reduce the damage of this attack.

Geirskogul

Line AoE

Deals damage in a line AoE. Simply move outside of the AoE indicator to avoid taking damage.

High Jump

AoE Markers

Targets several players with AoEs that create puddles on the ground that deal continuous damage. Spread out to avoid overlapping these.

Super Jump

Proximity AoE

Targets an area of the arena with a proximity AoE that deals more damage the closer you are to it. Run to the opposite end of the arena.

Geirskogul

Line AoEs

During Super Jump, Nidhogg will target several players with Geirskogul line AoEs. While moving to avoid the proximity AoE, stay out of these line AoEs.

Nidhogg will repeat these attacks until he has around 30 percent health remaining. Then, he will jump away and blast the arena with Bloodrage, dealing damage to the whole party, then transition the fight into its fourth and final phase.

Phase 4

This phase will begin with Nidhogg casting Horrid Roar and Cauterize at the same time. Avoid the circle AoEs and move out of Cauterize, then prepare to fight Nidhogg again.

In this phase, Nidhogg will repeat attacks from the first phase, while adding a few new ones.

Attack Name

Type

Details

Akh Morn

Continuous Stack Marker

Targets one player with a continuous Stack Marker. Group up on the affected player and stay there while Nidhogg continuously blasts the area with damage. Healers should heal through the duration of this attack.

Flame Blast

Line AoEs

Nidhogg will create several flame orbs that explode in cross-shaped line AoEs after a few seconds. Stand diagonally to each of the orbs to avoid these AoEs.

Hot Tail

Line AoE

This attack will be used immediately after Hot Wing, dealing damage in a line AoE down Nidhogg’s center, where the previously safe area for Hot Wing was. After Hot Wing resolves, move to either side to avoid Hot Tail.

Nidhogg will repeat all of these mechanics until he is defeated. The last fight of this part is relatively short, but you will need to take extra care to deal with Akh Morn, as this can easily wipe the party if the healers don’t heal enough or not enough people group together.
