There are four DLC to play for Final Fantasy 15, and while they are optional, they do all play a part in the overall story and take place in specific chapters. Each party member has a moment in the game when they are separated from the others, and during that time, each of the DLC takes place.
Each of the DLC gives a better perspective on how and why the character is coming back changed after their time away, while also giving unique play styles as you learn to play as someone other than Noctis. Here is the best time to play each of the DLC.

When it comes to Final Fantasy 15, there is no boss bigger or badder than Adamantoise. Beating Adamantoise isn’t for the faint of heart, but our guide will make it easier.
When Should You Play Each DLC In Final Fantasy 15
Each DLC happens during a very specific point in the story, though you can choose to play them anytime after that if you’d rather focus on Noctis’ main story for a bit longer. That being said, playing a DLC before it happens in the story will of course lead to spoilers, especially with the final DLC that will be included in this article.
Each DLC is about 3 or four hours long with optional boss battles and time trials after you finish the main story.
When Does Episode Gladiolus Take Place
After the events of Chapter 6, Gladiolus leaves the party and spends most of Chapter 7 away; during that time the events of Episode Gladiolus take place. You can choose to play this DLC either before or after he rejoins the party, as long as you play it and beat the boss after he leaves the party.
When Does Episode Ignis Take Place
Episode Ignis takes place at the end of Chapter 9 after Noctis fights Leviathan and is knocked unconscious. While he doesn’t leave the party in the same way Gladiolus does, the events of this DLC happen between Chapters 9 and 10, with Noctis waking up long after the events of the DLC finish so you can choose to play it anytime after beating Leviathan.
When Does Episode Prompto Take Place
The beginning of Episode Prompto takes place during Chapter 12 when Prompto is knocked off the train. The events of the DLC continue until partway through Chapter 13 when he rejoins the group and should be played after he rejoins towards the end of 13.
When Does Episode Ardyn Take Place
The events of this DLC take place many years before the events of the game, but everything about Ardyn is intentionally left as a mystery until the very end of the game. It’s recommended you first beat the game and learn all the surprises about Ardyn before learning about his back story, as it will spoil some surprises that are spoken about commonly in the DLC.
