Being able to play across platforms is becoming increasingly popular. Huge gaming developers and indie devs alike are working hard to bring crossplay features to their games. As for 7 Days To Die, crossplay capabilities were priority number one. The Fun Pimps pushed the changes for this update just before Christmas 2024, much to the delight of fans.

How Crossplay Works
Players on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X consoles can now host peer-to-peer multiplayer sessions across all of the aforementioned platforms. 7 Days To Die’s crossplay features work for all the Pregen maps. It also works for random gen maps. However, there are some limitations to this feature.

It’s also important to note that if you are playing on a PC, your game files must be unmodified in order for the crossplay features to work. The two main options for crossplay are hosting sessions and joining sessions. Follow the guides below to get set up with these features.
How To Host A Session
When you start up the game and select either Continue Game or New Game, you’ll see a handful of settings on the right side of the screen. It doesn’t matter whether you are setting up a new game or continuing an old save file, the process of hosting a session works the same way.
The first option is Server Enabled. In order to be able to host a session, you’ll need to switch this setting to online. Once this has been turned on, you’ll be able to toggle the other settings on the list. The next one you’ll want to change is Server Visibility. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, it isn’t possible to use crossplay features if your Server Visibility is set to friends. Instead, you’ll need to set this option to public. You can put a password on your session to prevent random people from joining. That said, at the time of writing, there are a few limitations about joining random players.
Once your Server Visibility is set to public, you’ll need to turn on Crossplay Enabled. After you’ve done this, you’ll need to make sure that the Max Players option is set to 8 or below. At the time of writing, it isn’t possible to host a larger session than this. Doing so will prevent friends from being able to find your world. Once this is done, you can load up the world and your friends should be able to join you.
How To Join A Session
Joining a session is much simpler than hosting one. When you load up the game, select Join A Game. From here, you’ll need to enter the gamer tag of the person you are trying to join.
Once you’ve entered the person’s name, hit Start Search. Provided that the name is correct, their name will pop up, and you’ll be able to connect to their server. If your friend has put a password on the server, then you’ll need to make sure you have it, or you won’t be able to join them. Once you are in, you can start exploring, looting, and killing enemies with your friends.
Crossplay Limitations
Unfortunately, there are a few limitations around the crossplay features available in 7 Days To Die. The biggest one is its lack of dedicated servers. According to the update’s patch notes, dedicated servers are being worked on, but for now, crossplay only works in peer-to-peer games. Dedicated servers are going to be released with the game’s next big update; Storms Brewing.
There are also limits around world sizes and player count. The more players on any given server the greater the risk of performance issues. The better your system or console, the smoother the gameplay.
The maximum world size at the time of writing is 8192. This is still a pretty respectable map size. But some players will want the ability to play on bigger maps in the future. It is unclear as to whether the devs will increase the map size limit for crossplay further down the line.
Something else that’s worth noting is that the maximum supported player count for crossplay is 8. While there are some players who want more, 8 players is still a respectable number. It’s unclear whether this number will be increased by the Fun Pimps in the future. Also, for those on PC, it’s not possible to host modded worlds. It’s important to remove or deactivate any mods prior to setting up a crossplay session.
Unfortunately, not everyone is able to access crossplay features at the moment. Those playing on the Japanese PS5 version of the game can’t yet play with friends on different consoles. This is set to change soon, but no specific date has been set. The only thing that is known about this is that this issue is supposed to be fixed early this year.
Other Noteworthy Update 1.2 Features
7 Days To Die update 1.2 introduced a handful of useful bug fixes and improvements, some of which were made to make crossplay easier. One issue prior to this update was that players on Xbox and PS5 could not find their friends in the server browser. This has now been fixed.
There is now a blocklist that can be found in the settings menu. This is a much-needed feature as it allows players to block any cheaters or toxic players while being able to keep track of their names to prevent them from joining again. Unfortunately, cheating and griefing are things that happen in pretty much every online game. Being able to have an active blocklist helps to keep these players away.
There have also been a few new graphic options that give players more control over the game’s performance. This is great for those who are playing on systems that might struggle to cope hosting a crossplay session with topped-out graphics. Alternatively, those playing on top-notch systems can now up the overall graphic quality to incredible levels.
One other thing to note is that the game now has better Blood Mood Scaling. This is perfect for those playing with friends, as it means that the number of enemies and the overall difficulty of the enemies that spawn will better match the skill and game stage of the players within the session.
