Everdale, Everdale missed opportunity

  • Everdale experienced two shutdowns by the developers despite it having a pre-test by another name.
  • Premium currency Gem couldn’t carry the game, discouraging players from making purchases, one of the big reason for to shutdown
  • Everdale failed to generate the expected market value.

Everdale was a peaceful city-builder game from the popular video game creator company Supercell. The gameplay was based on cooperation and friendship. In the fantasy world of peace and relaxation, Everdale was a stand-out title from the makers. But fans were heartbroken a couple of times as the game had to go through two shutdown periods. In this article, I’ll try to explore the reasons why Everdale was a missed opportunity as the companies had to discontinue the game.

Featured Column – The Missed Opportunity

Ever played a game and thought “Oh no, what a missed opportunity!” Exploring the same sentiment is GamingonPhone’s The Missed Opportunity column which explores failed chances in gameplay, design, or even marketing that could have elevated these mobile titles. Each piece delves into what went wrong and what could’ve been done better.

Everdale was impressive at launch, quite a stand-out title from Supercell

Everdale was a good game people got attached to so quickly. When I first started playing, the first thing that crossed my mind was “Wow! This is better than Hay Day“! But considering the time when Hay Day was released, it’s good. But I wanted to say that Everdale hooked me more. I know some of you will argue on this but I like the interactive gameplay Everdale offered.

I even saw players who said, “Everdale is the only game I liked in the last 5 years“! But I know that each game has its core fans. We may overlook one person’s statement, but the game was good, a thousand others are saying so. The peaceful village where I keep pushing my upgrades and the valley that I became a part of, are still giving me goosebumps.

Everdale was fun. But Supercell might have noticed the monetization issues, good for players but the opposite for a business. I mean I can spend money to support the game and take advantage of the features but considering the nature of the I might hold back. This could have been the case for many gamers.

Supercell’s high standard may have been the key reason

Supercell has three Titan performers in its lineup: Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars, and Clash Royale. For a new title meeting both the quality standards and monetization requirements is not that simple. And when Supercell already had a farming simulation title, the case study was already in their hands.

While Supercell said that the game wasn’t meeting their expectations, it’s not very clear what was the exact issue. Metacore said the same leaving the fans in awe.

Supercell set its standards on a massive height, at least their previous history with discontinuing games tells so. The company has discontinued more games than it has currently in the market.

For Everdale, it’s market opportunity, future, value, and several other things are concerned. This is where Everdale was out of track. Some fans said that the game wasn’t generating enough for Supercell. Some claimed that none would spend money on a relaxing game. I guess both of these arguments make sense.

Everdale faced several setbacks during its limited-time life. It was first out in a soft-launch version back in August 2021. But the surprising thing is the game was published under a different name one year before its soft launch. It was out under the name Valleys & Villages, published by Osmium Interactive Pte. Ltd. Supercell wanted to see the demand in the market. However, after being published under Supercell’s banner in 2021, the game failed to meet expectations and the company decided to shut it down.

In 2023, the game made a comeback in development as Metacore took over the IP rights. I was, like the others, happy seeing the title again. But again on the 18th of September 2024, the company decided to shut the servers down.

Fans saw the light of hope after Metacore took the game to their table and started developing it again. But the game failed to “meet the expectation” of Metacore. The company said that the primary reason behind killing the game is its failed effort to generate the expected market value, which in simple terms means that the game does not have the potential to make enough money. Everdale will always be remembered as a missed opportunity for us!
