For the most part, it has been a pretty solid few years for the Warhammer franchise in the video game space. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 released to very positive reviews last year, offering a successful sequel to the 2011 original. Meanwhile, games like Warhammer 40,000: Darktide and Total War: Warhammer 3 also proved to be popular among fans of the franchise. Even older games like Warhammer: Vermintide 2 received continued support from its developer, thanks to a dedicated player base.

A new report from MP1st has claimed that an unannounced Warhammer RPG from developer Thought Pennies has been canceled by Games Workshop. It was revealed in November 2024 that Thought Pennies was laying off staff after its ongoing project lost funding, and a look at the LinkedIn profiles of several employees has unveiled a few details about the game. One describes the game as an “Unannounced Unreal 5 Warhammer title,” while another claims it’s a “cancelled fantasy live service RPG in Unreal 5.” Perhaps the most descriptive resume claims the game was a “Co-Op PvE Action RPG with a cast of unique heroes and playstyles,” a unique glimpse into what could’ve been a great Warhammer Fantasy game.
Games Workshop May Have Canceled a Warhammer Fantasy RPG
It should be noted that while this report does infer a lot from these LinkedIn profiles, the small size of the studio makes it very unlikely that it had more than one project in development at a time. With some naming it directly as a Warhammer game and others specifying it as an RPG, it’s difficult to imagine it being anything else. At this point, it’s unclear why Games Workshop would cancel the rumored Warhammer RPG. Some of the specified resumes claim to have been working on the game as early as August 2022, so it had been in the works for quite a while, but perhaps progress had not been as hoped.
Despite this disappointing news, it’s still a really good time to be a fan of the Warhammer franchise. Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 TV show is still moving forward at Amazon, while Space Marine 2 has a strong roadmap for the coming year on the video game side of things. The franchise is only growing in popularity, and hopefully, that will translate to even better projects in the future.
