Persona 5 Tactica May Be a Black Sheep, But It Deserves a Sequel Anyway

Persona 5 Tactica hasn’t been the biggest of the series’ spin-offs, but the concept is worth revisiting sometime in the future. Persona 5 Tactica once again took the cast of a Persona game and threw them into a new style of gameplay, just like most of the series’ spin-offs have done. At the moment, it’s not clear if the ideas that Persona 5 Tactica brought up will return in a later game, or if it will remain as a one-and-done experiment. However, there is enough reason for the developers to consider giving the formula at least one more try.

There are multiple titles branching off of Persona 5, from its remake to the several spin-offs that have come in its wake. It’s a format that the Persona series has been experimenting with for several years, and it has largely led to positive results. It provided one clear advantage in creating a steady stream of Persona titles, even in the time between main series releases. In addition, it also gave fans several games featuring old favorite party members, even if the circumstances were frequently different. It seems that as long as the Persona series keeps thriving, spin-off games will keep coming out as well, and another shot at the Tactica formula could be a good one to pursue.

Persona 5 Tactica Can Evolve Into Persona’s Next Prominent Spin-Off Series

Persona 5 Tactica is its Own Flavor of RPG

Despite being another RPG, the gameplay of Persona 5 Tactica is a major departure from the main series. Movement and positioning play a big role in combat, adding a strategic element that would be familiar to fans of Fire Emblem. This contrasts with the main Persona titles, where the turn-based battles rarely take such details into account. In addition, features such as the skill trees and Sub-Personas offer a welcome amount of customization, giving the player plenty of options for improving their party. Persona 5 Tactica definitely had some good ideas, and with another shot, they could be refined into more impressive forms.

More Persona Games Could Benefit From Their Own Tactica Spin-Offs

The Tactica formula could benefit from the vast potential for more Persona spin-offs. Other spin-offs have already reached multiple games’ casts, such as the Persona Q games and the dancing spin-offs. It would be pretty interesting to see how S.E.E.S. from Persona 3 or Persona 4‘s Investigation Team would operate in Persona 5 Tactica‘s style. Not only could they and their Personas get new designs, but they could also tell new stories since each of those games had a very different approach compared to Persona 5. Another S.E.E.S. mission or mystery in Inaba could spur an adventure in the footsteps of Persona 5 Tactica.

Persona 5 Tactica definitely had some good ideas, and with another shot, they could be refined into more impressive forms.

A New Persona Tactica Can Make its Mechanics More Exciting

Another Persona Tactica game could also bring about updates to the formula. Persona 5 Tactica‘s emphasis on positioning could be employed in a few new ways. For instance, letting certain characters have unique bonuses in close proximity, or having skills with effects that affect the battlefield after use. There could also be more opportunities to drastically change the flow of battle, either by destroying certain areas of the battlefield or using other means to manipulate it. Persona 5 Tactica‘s brought a unique flavor to Persona‘s combat, and a sequel could give players more chances to wreak havoc in creative and effective ways.

The approach of Persona 5 Tactica has enough merit to warrant another game. Whether it once again involves Persona 5‘s Phantom Thieves or switches focus to another game’s protagonists, there is a lot of potential to surpass what the first installment managed to do. A Persona game with a more tactical, map-based approach to combat is an interesting idea, and Persona 5 Tactica proved that the concept can work. While it wasn’t the series’ biggest success, there’s plenty of reason to give the spin-off another chance in the future.
