In addition to custom outfits and furniture, The Sims 4 also lets you make changes to the game’s overworld, even if it’s a bit more complex. Custom world mods aren’t as common as other mod types, and mostly focus on graphic overhauls and the like. That being said, here are some of our favorites.

Updated on January 18, 2025 by Rowan Cardosa: A couple of mods were updated or have new versions available, so we’ve changed their entries to reflect the latest version. We’ve also added a few more custom world mods that were missed last time.

While some DLCs provide players with a handful of options, the vast majority of neighborhoods in The Sims are based on areas in North America or Europe. Simmers from outside these regions (or who just want a change of scenery) have to resort to CC to scratch their itch.

This mod replaces the Willow Creek neighborhood from the base game with a (very) condensed version of Japan. All lots have been rebuilt, and all Willow Creek families and townies have been replaced with new Sims.

Walls & Towers Hood Decor

The Sims Medieval was a fantastic game that gave fantasy fans and simmers alike a truly unique experience. There haven’t been any medieval spinoff games since then, however, which is more than a little disappointing. CC creators have tried to fill the void ever since.

These handy walls and towers will help give any world some medieval flair. Whether you’re planning a gritty historical save or building the fantasy world of your dreams, this is a decorative item you won’t want to miss.

Matte/Backdrop Default Replacements

It’s easy for neighborhoods in The Sims 4 to look just a little too… fake. This is especially noticeable when it comes to the backdrops that come with each world. The two-dimensional backdrops almost look like cardboard cutouts, breaking immersion.

Enhance the supernatural experience.

This is a simple mod that replaces the cartoony two-dimensional EA backdrops with ones that look just a bit more realistic. These backdrops have detailed textures and are fully three-dimensional, making the tiny worlds of The Sims 4 look just a little bigger.

Empty Worlds For All Packs

Unlike its predecessors, it’s not currently possible to create custom worlds out of whole cloth in The Sims 4. This makes it more than a little frustrating if you want a fresh start, as you’re forced to choose from premade worlds that already have plenty of lots and Sims baked in.

Luckily, someone else has gone through the painstaking process of getting rid of everything and everyone for you. Mcrudd’s empty save file gives you a nice blank slate to play around in. This mod is updated every time there’s a new DLC, so keep coming back to check for new developments.

6

Fluffy Clouds

EA’s default clouds are hardly the stuff dreams are made up of. They’re thin, wispy little farts full of nothing but disappointment, and don’t do much to add life to your scenery. When you compare it to the whimsical, cartoonish art style The Sims 4 is usually known for, it’s pretty underwhelming.

This mod gives you nice, fluffy clouds you’ll want to scoop up and eat like mashed potatoes. They give a sweet, dreamy vibe to any neighborhood, and are a must if you want to add more life to your overworld. These clouds also change color depending on the time of day, adding a dash of realism to your game.

5

Evergreen Harbor Untextured Background Shell Fix

Evergreen Harbor is an EA neighborhood that could have been so much more. It’s rough around the edges, unfinished, and just looks and feels more like a beta world than something that should have been shipped out with a finished product. Luckily, there are various mods in place for you to make it look polished.

Ran out of recipes to try? You’ll want this mod.

There are several shell buildings littered throughout Evergreen Harbor that have missing textures. This mod adds them back, so you’re not left with eldritch structures that look like they spawned out of the alpha version of this game. If you love Evergreen Harbor but agree it needs some TLC, this is for you.

4

Jochi’s World Texture Replacements

The Sims 3 introduced Simmers to a massive open world, complete with plenty of Easter eggs and textures that made the world feel just a touch more realistic. Come The Sims 4, many things were flattened for the sake of conserving resources, but the community’s reaction was mixed.

User Jochitec has a variety of different mods that replace the textures in each neighborhood with ones that feel more detailed. There’s one for most of the EA neighborhoods, so you should check Jochi’s profile to see if your favorite neighborhood has gotten a makeover.

3

Kativip’s Medieval Boat

Kativip has a treasure trove of different items you can download if you’re playing a medieval-themed game. Some of these are shell buildings such as houses and churches, but you might want to forgo those in favor of building your own functional structures. However, these adorable boats just can’t be passed up.

There are a few different models for you to choose from, but the one we’ve linked is our personal favorite. They’re great for viking-themed worlds, where you can put a few on the shore to make the beaches seem more lively. You can also use them for a fantasy-themed game, if you love playing with supernatural Sims.

2

Evergreen Harbor Backdrop Fix

Eco Lifestyle is a DLC that has a lot of great ideas, but just can’t nail the execution right. Nowhere does this become more apparent than the neighborhood of Evergreen Harbor, which can look unfinished and unpolished during the best of times. Luckily, there are mods out there to fix that.

The backdrop in Evergreen Harbor has a tendency to disappear, leaving a blank blue void in its place. This mod restores them to their proper glory, so you can gaze upon distant mountains as your Sims carry about their business. It’s indispensable if you want your game to be just a little prettier.

Srsly’s Blank Save

We’ve covered empty save files earlier in this list, but the good news is that you have options when it comes to blank slates. If mcrudd’s mod isn’t for you, SrslySims also has their own take on the concept with their custom save file. All lots have been bulldozed and set to residential by default.

There’s no limit to what you can do, from switching some of those lots back to community to building a new town practically from scratch. If you miss EA’s premade households, don’t despair: the mod’s creator included them, safe and sound, in the optional files. The creator also has a Sim version of themselves in the bin, as a nice Easter egg.
