There’s been a fantastic resurgence of classic JRPGs coming to PC in fresh new forms lately, with the likes of Romancing SaGa 2, Trails Through Daybreak, and Dragon Quest 3 all making their way to us over the past few months. The latest on the list is Tales of Graces f Remastered, the 2009 installment in the now 30-year-old series that most recently brought us the fantastic Tales of Arise. Marking the first time it’s arrived on PC, and with a robust remaster featuring key quality-of-life updates, now’s a great time to try an excellent RPG that you might have missed.

Standing alongside the likes of Elden Ring and Tekken as one of the crowning jewels in publisher Bandai Namco’s lineup, the Tales series includes some of the best JRPGs around. First released exclusively in Japan for the Wii in 2009 as Tales of Graces, it later came to the PlayStation 3 globally as Tales of Graces f, but has now finally made its way to PC courtesy of this brand-new remaster. As such, there’s a good chance many will have missed out on it originally, making now the time to rectify that.

Much like Final Fantasy, you won’t need to be familiar with the other Tales games to play this one – so don’t worry if you came in with one of the recent entries such as Arise or Berseria, or haven’t ever touched it before. Tales of Graces f tells a very charming story, albeit one packed with fairly traditional character tropes, and features a battle system that still holds up as one of the best offerings in the entire series.

Along with the polished visuals of the remaster and support for up to 120fps, the combat has also been given an upgrade. It’s a satisfying party-based setup that lets your team switch between battle styles on the fly, giving you more control over the distance, power, and range of your attacks. The ‘Accel Mode’ system allows you to ramp up the pace of the action even more with powerful character-specific abilities such as stopping time, summoning defensive barriers, or unleashing devastating attacks on your foes.

There are quite a few welcome quality-of-life improvements to be found in the remaster as well. These include quest destination icons to ensure you don’t get lost, the ability to disable encounters from triggering when you get close to enemies, an instant retry option when you fail battles, and subtitles for post-fight dialogue. You’ll even get over 80 pieces of DLC from the original game, making this a truly definitive package.
