When it comes to Dungeons & Dragons, there are two classes that really let players feel their growth in power more than any others. Of course, getting stronger as the player levels up is a key part of most RPGs, tabletop or otherwise. However, there are some circumstances where a player can start out fairly weak, but by the endgame, they become an absolute powerhouse. A player’s build will always affect their character’s level of power and versatility, but generally speaking, two classes in Dungeons & Dragons enjoy some of the game’s biggest power spikes through the levels.
In any adventure in Dungeons & Dragons, leveling up is one of the most exciting parts. Not only do the player characters get more capable, but they can also stand up to bigger threats. There is a lot of excitement to be derived from being able to wield amazing powers as well as the knowledge of what new threats they can overcome. Even in adventures that aren’t focused on combat, players will be able to notice their improved talents. This kind of satisfaction is one of the most important feelings that long-running Dungeons & Dragons campaigns should be able to bring out in its players.

D&D’s Barbarian and Wizard Are Completely Opposite Classes
Among the playable classes in Dungeons & Dragons, it’s hard to imagine two that are more different than the Barbarian and Wizard. The Barbarian is a brute-force martial class who thrives in combat, arguably even more than the Fighter. Meanwhile, the Wizard is Dungeons & Dragons‘ premier magic user, with a wide list of arcane spells at their disposal. This is furthered by Barbarians having the largest hit die in the game, while WIzards have the smallest. They’re classes that cater to two completely different playstyles, with little overlaps in abilities or design. However, both are invaluable assets to a party in their own right.
Barbarians’ Rage Can Become an Unstoppable Force of Nature
Admittedly, players who play a Barbarian in Dungeons & Dragons will start on fairly solid footing, with at least 12 hit points and their natural Rage power. However, that Rage ends up getting exponentially stronger as time goes on, especially with the benefits like feats and magic weapons that players can take on. From growing in size to employing wild magic effects, a high-level Barbarian will easily be one of a party’s most destructive members. Not only are they natural tanks, but they can dish out remarkable damage as well. A Barbarian’s rage ending still has drawbacks, but those downsides don’t matter when their enemies are already gone.
High-Level Wizards Are Some of D&D’s Most Powerful Characters Possible
Conversely, close combat is the last possible place where Dungeons & Dragons‘ Wizards want to be. This is especially true in early levels, where they will have very few hit points and only the weakest spells to defend themselves. The flipside of this is that Wizards eventually get access to some truly devastating spells. At later levels, Wizards can wreak havoc with some of the most powerful damage options in the game, as well as powerful status-inflicting crowd control options that can end a battle as soon as it begins. Their fragility will exist throughout the adventure, but Wizards have so many powerful options that it’s more than balanced out.

Barbarians and Wizards provide some of the best examples of how powerful Dungeons & Dragons characters can become. In that sense, they also embody the excitement of the journey. Starting out as a group of fairly average adventurers and eventually becoming some of the strongest warriors in the realm is a common sight in RPGs. Barbarians can become almighty warriors who can crush any foe, and Wizards can change an entire battle with a spell. They provide the best examples of how Dungeons & Dragons‘ heroes can grow.
