Shuhei Yoshida Comments on PlayStation VR2

Summary

  • PSVR2 didn’t meet expectations, Yoshida for not being as popular as PS2.
  • PSVR2 struggled with hardware sales compared to previous PlayStation systems.
  • Lackluster performance improved with new game releases, indicating potential for future success.

Shuhei Yoshida says he’s sorry that the PlayStation VR2 didn’t end up as popular as the PS2. The PlayStation VR2 was released in February 2023 with plenty of hype surrounding the idea that it could elevate VR from its niche position in gaming to a concept embraced by casual gamers and the broader industry. While maintaining some level of success, the PSVR2 did not entirely push the boundaries as some had hoped.

Shortly after the PSVR2’s release, it became clear that the PlayStation hardware was struggling, selling a couple hundred thousand within its first months compared to the original system, which reached 1 million sales in a similar time frame. Although games like Resident Evil 4 VR and Horizon: Call of the Mountain kept interest in the PSVR2 afloat by attaching the experience of well-known IPs to PlayStation’s ambitious new hardware, it wasn’t enough to keep the platform thriving. Although the PSVR2 still receives support, it doesn’t appear to be the same level of attention the system received after its launch, signaling that PlayStation’s priorities around the hardware have largely shifted.

In a clip from the Kinda Funny Gamescast, former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida commented on the status of PSVR2, stating “I’m sorry I was wrong, PSVR2 didn’t become PS2.” Greg Miller followed up by asking “What happened with PSVR2?” To which Yoshida laughed, before saying “Let’s move on.” Many people were quick to point out the subpar performance of the PSVR2 following its 2023 launch compared to PlayStation’s roster of usually popular hardware. Although this is far from a formal statement on the matter, Yoshida’s acknowledgment that the PlayStation VR2 could have done better may be enough for some.

Former Sony Exec Apologizes For PSVR2’s Stumbles

Yoshida and Miller both approached the topic with a humorous perspective, embracing the idea that compared to the PS2 and even the PS5, the PSVR2 seems like a flop for Sony. Despite the PSVR2’s lackluster sales, it appears that two years after release has been long enough for the hardware to get some of the support it might have needed earlier.

At the end of 2024, the PlayStation VR2 gained a couple of titles including Trombone Champ: Unflattened, and Alien: Rogue Incursion, eventually leading into 2025 with a VR release of Hitman: World of Assassination set for March. Over time, the PSVR2 has picked up steam, indicating that aside from a cut to its somewhat hard-to-approach price tag, the missing piece of the puzzle was a larger collection of more enticing games—something the PlayStation 2 is legendary for. Despite the acceptance that the console hasn’t done so great, the PSVR2 may still have some life left.
