Hyper Light Breaker: Extraction, Explained

Hyper Light Breaker: Extraction, Explained

Hyper Light Breaker introduces a lot of mechanics that fans of the previous game, Hyper Light Drifter, may be unfamiliar with. The game mostly features roguelike mechanics like randomized world generation and randomized items and enemies, but it also features a mechanic borrowed from the Extraction genre that’s vital for long-term survival.

Hyper Light Breaker: Healing Guide & How To Get More Medkits

In Hyper Light Breaker, healing comes in many forms, but none are as powerful as the Medkit. Unfortunately, you don’t start with the Medkit unlocked.

With the appropriately named Extraction mechanic, Hyper Light Breaker lets players escape a run without progressing a Cycle. Follow this guide to understand what Extraction does for you in Hyper Light Breaker and learn how to engage with this important system – it just might save your run.

Hyper Light Breaker Extraction Extract Countdown

In Hyper Light Breaker, Extraction is a way to escape the Overgrowth safely and return to the Cursed Outpost without losing anything. When you die, your gear will degrade and the current Cycle will progress as you lose one Rez. But if you successfully Extract, you will return to the Hub, nothing will degrade, and you will not lose any Rez.

Extraction is an essential mechanic you must interact with if you hope to finish a Cycle. Because you keep all resources and equipped items, Extracting gives you a chance to upgrade your currently-equipped gear, spend Cores on stat upgrades, purchase new equipment with your saved Bright Blood, and more.

When you initiate an Extraction, Hyper Light Breaker players will see a wall suddenly form around the Extraction Zone. Then, waves of progressively stronger enemies will spawn as the green bar progresses: one wave of enemies for every notch as the Extraction event progresses.

Hyper Light Breaker: How To Lock-On Target

In Hyper Light Breaker, lock on to enemies to keep them focused and more effectively single out specific targets.

When the bar is full a miniboss will spawn. Defeat this boss and the remaining enemies to successfully Extract back to the Cursed Outpost to rest up. The next time you go into the Overgrowth, the Danger meter will be reset back to 0 even though the Cycle will not have progressed.

Hyper Light Breaker Extraction Icon Map

To start an Extraction, Hyper Light Breaker players should open up the map of the Overgrowth and look for an icon with a red arrow pointed upward from a white line. This is the Extraction point in your current version of the Overgrowth.

After collecting some items and resources, or when your HP gets too low to continue, start heading towards the Extraction point. It’s a good idea to start making your way here once the Danger bar reaches about halfway.

The Extraction zone looks like a landing pad for a ship with a glowing node in the center. Stand on this glowing point and hold down the Interact button to initiate the Extraction countdown. If you want to cancel the Extraction event, press up on the D-Pad before the short timer ends.

You will be immediately healed for 50 HP upon initiating an Extraction, and the event progression bar will appear along with a horde of low-level enemies. From here, it’s up to you to defeat all the enemy waves and the miniboss that spawns as the green bar progresses.

If you are Successful, your Breaker will lift up into the air and arrive back in the Hub safe and sound with full HP and everything that was collected in the last Run.
