FromSoftware has long been known for the cryptic and fairly inaccessible lore in its games, and that tradition continued in Elden Ring and its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Now, the same is to be expected of Elden Ring Nightreign, the upcoming cooperative Elden Ring spin-off that is breaking new ground for the Dark Souls developer. However, while cryptic lore and mysterious characters are a given for Elden Ring Nightreign, it can’t miss what may be its final chance to explore one of Elden Ring‘s most unexplored characters.
There are plenty of characters in Elden Ring lore that have a large amount of mystery surrounding them, but few are as fascinating or as ambiguous as the Gloam-Eyed Queen. There’s no telling where FromSoftware plans to take Elden Ring after Elden Ring Nightreign, nor whether there are any plans at all, but the fact that Nightreign could be the last Elden Ring game for some time puts it in a unique position to finally reveal more about the Gloam-Eyed Queen.

The Gloam-Eyed Queen Is One of Elden Ring’s Most Mysterious Characters
Of all the elusive characters in Elden Ring, none quite compare to the Gloam-Eyed Queen when it comes to what little is known about her. According to Elden Ring lore, the Gloam-Eyed Queen was an Empyrean chosen by the Two Fingers, putting her in the same divine league as Ranni and Malenia. It is said that she commanded the Godskin Apostles, whose mission was to overthrow the Greater Will itself. Wielding the god-slaying Black Flame imbued with Destined Death, the Gloam-Eyed Queen challenged Queen Marika’s authority but was ultimately defeated by Maliketh, who sealed Destined Death away. After her defeat, the Queen vanished, leaving a myriad of unanswered questions in her wake.
Nightreign May Be the Last Chance for Elden Ring to Reveal More About the Gloam-Eyed Queen
It might seem like enough information about the Gloam-Eyed Queen has been provided already in Elden Ring lore, but there are still plenty of questions about her that Elden Ring Nightreign alone may be able to answer. Considering Elden Ring‘s popularity, one would think that Elden Ring Nightreign would be received with open arms by the gaming community, especially devoted fans of FromSoftware. However, since all that has come from the developer since 2022 is Elden Ring, including the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, Nightreign isn’t the best news, especially for those who have been awaiting news of a Bloodborne remake or sequel.
Of all the elusive characters in Elden Ring, none quite compare to the Gloam-Eyed Queen when it comes to what little is known about her.
As such, FromSoftware might have to be mad to give fans more Elden Ring after Nightreign, at least for a while. In light of that, Elden Ring Nightreign might be the last chance to resolve the remaining questions surrounding the Gloam-Eyed Queen. Firstly, her exact identity has largely remained a mystery, with many fans theorizing that she could be Melina, the Tarnished’s guide in Elden Ring and the game’s deuteragonist. It would make sense for the Gloam-Eyed Queen to still be alive in some form in the Lands Between, but that question has still gone unanswered.
Another great mystery surrounding the Gloam-Eyed Queen is her ultimate goal. Her reasoning behind rebelling against the Greater Will is largely unknown, including what she hoped to achieve in doing so. Considering the fact that Elden Ring Nightreign seems to have even darker undertones than Elden Ring, for it to explore the Gloam-Eyed Queen more thoroughly, or even to simply reveal her true identity, could deepen the lore surrounding Destined Death and the Godskin Apostles, thereby connecting the events of Elden Ring to Nightreign‘s new themes. In any case, it’s high time that Elden Ring divulged more about one of its most cryptic characters, and Nightreign may be the last chance to do so.
