Astro Bot Could Be Getting More Speedrunning Levels

Astro Bot Could Be Getting More Speedrunning Levels

Summary

  • Back in November, Team Asobi added the fifth and final speedrunning level to Astro Bot.
  • Despite this, a “never before seen” level was just showcased at PlayStation Tournaments XP.
  • It’s not clear if this level is a tournament exclusive or not, but players are already calling for it to be added as DLC.

A “never before seen” Astro Bot speedrunning level was just showcased during the finale of PlayStation Tournaments: XP, which could indicate that more time trials are in the works.

As has been made abundantly clear by its record-breaking number of Game of the Year awards, Astro Bot is an absolute gem of a game that most people consider to be damn near perfect. One of the biggest reasons for this is because of how feature-complete Astro’s adventure feels and how much platforming goodness Team Asobi managed to stuff onto the disk.

Astro Bot’s Worst Speed Run Level Ruined Christmas

I may never 100 percent Astro Bot now.

Despite the fact that Astro Bot already had plenty of content for players to get through when it launched a few months ago, Team Asobi has managed to make it an even bigger and better game through free post-launch DLC. Those free updates notably added some of the game’s biggest challenges in the form of five speedrunning levels.

Unreleased Astro Bot Speedrunning Level Showcased At PlayStation Tournaments

Just before Astro Bot launched, Team Asobi confirmed that the game would be getting 10 new stages through free updates, including five time trials and five challenge levels. Following the release of the final time trial, Rising Heat, back in November, most fans assumed that the speedrunning levels were over and done with, but that might not be the case after all.

Earlier today, PlayStation Tournaments: XP took place in London and surprisingly featured Astro Bot’s time trials as one of the main events. As pointed out by Twitter user Genki_JPN, the tournament was capped off with a unique challenge in the form of a brand-new speedrunning level featuring the Slow Motion powerup from Slo-Mo Casino.

As of the time of writing, it’s not been confirmed whether this previously unseen speedrunning stage is exclusive to PlayStation Tournaments or a tease that more time trials are on the way. The lack of any VIP Bots and the recycling of the Arctic theme suggests it might have been made specifically for the competition, but it’s not clear if that’s going to remain the case.

Over on the Astro Bot subreddit, a few users claimed that the presenters said the level was made exclusively for the tournament, but I didn’t hear that from watching myself.

Even if the speedrunning stage was made with PlayStation Tournaments in mind, the fact that Team Asobi has bothered to make more challenging time trials does suggest that the team is up for more. At the very least, it’s possible that this specific level eventually gets added to the game as a fun extra bonus.
