Saber Interactive has its finger firmly on the trigger after releasing a horde of new content for zombie shooter World War Z to kickstart 2025. World War Z was initially released in 2019, followed by a Nintendo Switch version in 2021, and the premise follows four survivors navigating the zombie apocalypse who battle undead hordes around New York, Tokyo, Moscow, and many more locations.

An upgraded version of World War Z, titled Aftermath, was released in 2021 and introduced Marseille, Rome, and the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula as new locations, as well as new characters, a modified melee system, and the addition of first-person mode. Of course, World War Z isn’t the only zombie shooter dominating the gaming community, as loyal Call of Duty fans have been getting their fill with the latest release. Black Ops 6 Zombies recently announced a wealth of Season 2 content, with the new map The Tomb being one of the highlights.

Saber Interactive, the studio behind World War Z and the upcoming Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, explains how its tech helps make the game special.

Posted on the developer’s official website, Saber provided patch notes for World War Z’s January update. One of the main takeaways from the patch included adjustments to the Sin City Apocalypse DLC, including a bunch of chip fixes at the Casino locations from Chapter 3. Quality-of-life improvements were also abundant, featuring an added animation to the stamina bar during a dust storm and additional sound effects for Chapter 2’s electrical discharges. A long list of bugs was also addressed, including an issue where sleeping-lying zombies would not react to players in Extinction mode. World War Z is ranked among some of the best co-op zombie games, alongside Dead Island 2 and Zombie Army 4: Dead War, and continued updates for the shooter are a testament to its popularity.

World War Z Gets Bug Fixes and Quality-Of-Life Improvements In New January Update

Summer 2024 saw the Battle for Arizona update arrive in World War Z: Aftermath, which included a new map, customization options, mid-game class changes, and enhanced Horde Mode XL gameplay. Thankfully, January’s update was also well received, as most players were happy to see support continue for the game, despite some issues persisting on the PS5 regarding Vanguard shield animations freezing.

Since the shooter is loosely based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Max Brooks and set in the same universe as the 2013 movie adaptation starring Brad Pitt, zombie fans believe a World War Z live-action sequel could improve on its predecessor. The movie deviated from the source material by removing several horror elements, and the original screenplay was rewritten to change how bleak the ending was. Currently, the prospect of a potential sequel remains unclear, but Saber’s shooter is certainly scratching the itch for more.
