An unforeseen glitch in World of Warcraft Classic’s latest Anniversary Realm update caused Season of Discovery characters to start showing up in PvP Battlegrounds. While the feature was quickly disabled after the issue was discovered, overpowered Season of Discovery characters were briefly terrorizing these World of Warcraft Classic realms for a short time.
Recently, World of Warcraft Classic’s new Anniversary Realms launched their Phase 2 update in two parts. The January 9 segment added the PvP Honor system, the Azuregos and Kazzak world bosses, and the Dire Maul dungeon that sparked drama in the World of Warcraft Hardcore streamer guild, OnlyFangs, while the second update, which just went live on January 16 at 2 PM PST, introduced the Warsong Gulch and Alterac Valley PvP Battlegrounds.

World of Warcraft players who subscribe for six or more months at a time can get some in-game items for both modern and Classic.
However, not long after, fans discovered an unexpected bug with these Battlegrounds. WoW Classic Fresh players started finding Season of Discovery characters in their Alterac Valley and Warsong Gulch matches, with more reports corroborating the situation’s presence on both the Alliance and Horde. The glitch was confirmed an hour after the update went live when Blizzard disabled Battlegrounds on the Anniversary realms, with WoW community manager Kaivax stating in a forum post that the issue should be resolved quickly.
WoW Classic Anniversary Realms Battlegrounds Glitch
This glitch is especially noteworthy because of the power disparity between Season of Discovery and Classic Fresh characters. Part of what makes Season of Discovery different is the ability to use Rune Engravings – powerful passive and active abilities that drastically increase a character’s strength. Were that not enough, Season of Discovery characters have had over a year to gear up, with many people having full Tier 2 sets, while WoW Classic Fresh fans have had just over a month to tackle Molten Core and Onyxia’s Lair.
Needless to say, this power gap led to some hilarious stories in the hour that these two servers met. Fans reported seeing overpowered Season of Discovery characters one-shotting entire groups of Classic Fresh opponents while wielding items that didn’t even exist in the original game, such as the Void-Touched weapons the mysterious Shadowy Figure remarks on in the experimental World of Warcraft realms. Ideally, Blizzard can quickly and effectively roll back the damage done by this issue so that players can fondly remember it as a funny glitch, rather than a game-breaking bug.
World of Warcraft Classic Season of Discovery starts Phase 7 on January 28, introducing the brand-new Karazhan Crypts dungeon and the endless Scourge Invasions event. Hopefully, this upcoming update doesn’t cause any issues that bleed into any other realms like this Classic Fresh one did.
