Throughout One Piece, Luffy overcomes plenty of incredible odds. Fighting Crocodile, Luffy used his own blood to defeat the villain, all while suffering the dangerous effects of a deadly poison. During the Impel Down Arc, Luffy nearly dies after being infected with Magellen’s venom, only barely surviving with the help of Ivankov. Fighting versus Katkuri, Luffy struggled with what many consider to be a much stronger opponent, for hours on end.

However, when it comes to physical challenges, Luffy’s fights against Kaido and Rob Lucci are two that pushed Luffy to his absolute limits. With Lucci outpacing both Gear 2 and Gear 3, Luffy’s desperation and determination barely earned him a victory. As for Kaido, the Emperor of the Sea basically killed the Straw Hat Captain, forcing him to awaken Gear 5 in order to win the fight. However, none of these challenges compare to what Luffy had to go through on Marineford.

The key to this ability is that it simply tricks Luffy’s body into fighting for longer, and doesn’t heal his injuries.

This emotional toll was so great on Luffy that, for the first time, the normally joyous pirate captain completely shut down. Additionally, soon after Ace died, One Piece’s Straw Hat Captain suffered one of his worst injuries at the hands of Akainu, a punch to the chest through Jinbe that nearly took him out of commission permanently. Without the help of Law, who had just arrived at the battlefield, Luffy would definitely have died during the Paramount War.

In the end, although Luffy has had some extremely difficult fights in the past, no other moment was just as challenging for the Straw Hat Captain as the War of the Best. In many ways, Luffy was completely physically outmatched on the battlefield of Marineford, suffering heavily from his injuries from before and during the war.
