Throughout the story of One Piece, there have been many interesting and mysterious characters who fans have intentionally been shown very little of. Chief among them is the legendary Rocks D. Xebec, a powerful pirate who was known as Gol D. Roger’s first and greatest rival, whom he could only take down with the help of Garp during the events of the infamous God Valley Incident.
While the character remains a mystery to fans, there are a few details about him that have gotten the fandom up in a frenzy. Although this is mainly just speculation based on vague details, some dedicated fans of One Piece say that they have cracked the code on Rocks’ true identity, claiming that he was someone that Oda has already introduced in the story way earlier on. So, let’s take a look at this theory and see if it makes any sense.

Very little is currently known about Rocks D. Xebec, only that he was essentially the top dog on the seas before Roger, which is mostly due to the fact that he had the most powerful pirate crew in history, consisting of powerhouses like Whitebeard, Kaido, and Big Mom among many others. Because of the unmitigated strength of this crew, the Rocks Pirates were treated more as a terrorist organization than a pirate crew by the World Government as they wanted to completely eradicate the organization.
This led to one of the greatest conflicts in history; the God Valley Incident. An event was held on this island known as the Native Hunting Competition, where the Celestial Dragons would hunt slaves for prizes. This is where the Rocks Pirates arrived but were joined there by the Roger Pirates and Marines, who formed an uneasy alliance to defeat Rocks’ crew. The captain seemingly died there and was never heard from again, which is strange given his importance as one of the only pirates to be a member of the D. Clan.

The Figarland family may just be the most powerful bloodline in One Piece, and here’s the awesome symbolism behind them!
Rocks D. Xebec Is Dr. Hiriluk
An Insane Fan Theory
The One Piece fandom is no stranger to some whacky theories, but this one is certainly among the craziest of them all. However, there is substantial reasoning behind this. It states that, somehow, Rocks survived the God Valley Incident and eventually went on to change his way of life, becoming a doctor who tried to help as many people as possible on Drum Island.
Though this sounds crazy, let’s take a look at some of the proof behind it. Firstly, Hiriluk explained that in his youth, he used to be an evil person and a thief roughly 38 years before the start of the main story and was situated somewhere in the West Blue. Furthermore, it was confirmed by Sengoku that Rocks was perhaps the most evil pirate around who sought to become the King of the World, as well as the fact that God Valley was located in the West Blue before it was erased from the map, so the timeline and location already add up.
Hiriluk claimed that one day, he was diagnosed with an incurable disease and that he once saw beautiful cherry blossoms which not only cured this disease but also removed the evil in his heart, prompting him to start helping others instead of taking from them. Somehow surviving from God Valley, Rocks eventually found his way to Drum Island and became a doctor. While it’s a stretch to reach such conclusions, it’s definitely believable to have happened.
Hiriluk also wore pants with a pattern of rocks on them, perhaps even hinting at a possible connection there. Moving on, it was revealed that Kuma eventually went on to save all the slaves on God Valley after he ate his Devil Fruit and gained his amazing abilities, so it might be possible that among those he saved was a broken and wounded Rocks, whom he took to a new island where he saw cherry blossoms, fostering his change of heart.
When do you think people die? When they are shot through the heart with the bullet of a pistol? No. When they are ravaged by an incurable disease? No. When they drink a soup made from a poisonous mushroom?! No! It’s when… they are forgotten!
Thematically, this makes sense too, since Hiriluk always claimed to be ashamed of his actions in the past. Moreover, the theory is made a little more believable when considering that Dr. Kureha apparently knew Roger personally, so it’s not crazy to assume that Hiriluk was also involved in some capacity. This also ties back in beautifully with Chopper, since the Straw Hat with the lowest bounty was the (adopted) son of the most infamous pirate of all time, making this a brilliant thematic decision.
Finally, the most damning evidence comes in Hiriluk’s very last scene, where he takes his life into his own hands, ending things on his own terms as a way of atoning for his past sins and closing up his chapter beautifully. Hiriluk dies with a smile on his face, which is said to be a common trait of all those belonging to the D. Clan, of which Rocks was the most notorious member. While this theory is unlikely, it’s great fun to speculate upon.
