The Far Cry franchise began in 2004, now spanning six mainline series entries, multiple DLC’s, and the spin-off Far Cry: Primal, amassing millions of units sold. The latest entry into the series, Far Cry 6, followed a revolution in the fictional Carribean Island, Yuba, with players tasked with taking down the vicious dictator, Antón Castillo, played by Giancarlo Esposito. As is the staple of the Far Cry franchise, players are forced to use guerrilla tactics to overthrow the big bad waiting for them at the end, whilst taking down their subordinates along the way.

However, as has been the issue for players with most other Far Cry games, the game becomes far too repetitive, far too quickly, with some areas of the map being dogged by anti-aircraft weaponry to limit exploration until the player reaches a high enough level. And even then, when it comes to finally exploring these areas, many are found to be largely devoid of new ideas, with scattered FND Bases to take care of and treasure to find. On the whole, the game feels repetitive and a bit empty. Far Cry 7 needs to shake this up by adding variety to its open-world setting to give players a reason to explore, rather than it being a tickbox exercise.

Maybe this isn’t the biggest issue facing the Far Cry franchise, but not allowing players to have a manual save file is a perplexing decision, to say the least. Far Cry 6 implemented an autosave only system that was confined to a singular save file.

This becomes an issue if players want to reload from a previous point, if, for example, they’ve made a mistake or would like to try a different way of completing an objective, allowing them to backtrack if they need to. It’s a glaring omission from Far Cry 6 and should definitely make a return to Far Cry 7.
