The Best Digimon Movies

The Best Digimon Movies

Fans have loved the Digimon series for many decades now. Even though it suffers from constant comparisons to another popular monster-collecting series that is played by a good amount of people, Digimon fans are some of the most die-hard groups of people. Aside from games, toys, anime, and even card games, the series expands on its lore through various feature films.

Pokemon Vs Digimon: Which Series Is Better?

We take a look at the anime and games of Pokémon and Digimon to settle the age-old question, which is better?

Digimon has had a handful of movies with theatrical releases, and although not all of them have been a smash, they give fans an even bigger glimpse into the Digital World beyond what the series and games have to offer.

There have been many Digimon shorts, but for the sake of this list, we are only ranking feature-length films.

Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning

The Beginning is one of the newest films on the list, but it is by far one of the worst. Most fans were extremely excited when this film was announced, but sadly, the Adventure 02 kids didn’t play much of a role in the battle. This film focused mostly on another secret DigiDestined kid named Lui Ohwada, whose partner Digimon, Ukkomon, killed his parents in an attempt to please the depressed child.

If this plot sounds terrifying, that’s because it is. The bulk of the film gives a background story on Lui, including body horror, and where he has been while the rest of the children were exploring the Digital World. Luckily we did get incredible new animations of Imperialdramon, but that is just about it when it comes to good things to say about The Beginning.

Battle Of Adventurers

Although there is nothing egregiously wrong with this film, it simply doesn’t do much for the incredible and fan-favorite season of the Digimon anime, Digimon Tamers. This film takes place during the kids’ summer break and fans are introduced to a new character, Uehara Minami.

The Release Special Booster 2.0 brought many pricey cards to the Digimon Card Game. These are the most expensive ones.

The film feels more like a long episode of Digimon Tamers and the proof is in its short run time of 50 minutes. It still counts as a feature film and it was in theatres upon its release, but we’re pretty sure most fans have long forgotten this film, even if Uehara’s backstory is quite sad.

Digimon: The Movie

Tai Kamiya as a toddler holding Kari Kamiya as a baby from Digimon The Movie.

The Ska-ridden fever dream that is the original movie has been ingrained in fans’ minds for decades now. It begins in a bit of a confusing manner (and I’m not talking about the Angela Anaconda bit) by Hikari, the last DigiDestined, recanting the story of how they met their Digimon pal Agumon for the first time when they were toddlers.

Most fans assumed that the children all met Digimon for the first time when the kids were at summer camp that one fateful day in August, but they had encountered the Digital Monsters way back. The movie is technically three different short films, Digimon Adventure, Our War Game!, and Hurricane Touchdown!!, spliced together, but there is plenty of information that you’ll miss if you choose to omit some of them.

Digimon Adventure tri.

All of the original DigiDestined from Digimon Adventure tri.

Surely you’ll find countless threads of people talking about how much they hate Digimon Adventure tri. with all their heart, but bear with me, it’s not that bad; it’s actually quite fun and the animation is incredible. The story has a couple of problems pacing-wise, as they definitely lose stream towards the back half of the six-movie run, but that is to be expected of a story being told over SIX movies.

Which Season Of The Digimon Anime Is The Best?

Call it Savers, call it Data Squad; either way, I know the majority response will be Adventure 01 and/or Tamers, but I’m a Marcus Damon fan through and through.

Not sure why the studio had to produce this many movies, but if you were a fan waiting as each one came out over three years, you remember how disappointed the fanbase was. The films have a lot of potential. Great new characters are introduced, amazing callbacks to older movies, and an Alphamon appearance is always welcome.

Digimon Adventure tri. takes place throughout six different movies (Reunion, Determination, Confession, Loss, Coexistence, and Future) but they all feel like really long anime episodes.

2

Digital Monster X-Evolution

Even though this film is the most different from what you usually expect from a Digimon film, it’s some of the best content that the team at Toei Animation has produced. Digital Monster X-Evolution is a full CG animated film that chronicles the story of Digimon Chronicle, a short manga starring the X-Antibody Digimon, Dorumon.

The series is not your usual Digimon tale where you’ll meet charismatic characters who team up with Digimon to save the real and Digital world, but rather, it takes place completely in the Digital World and how Ygdrasil, the ruler of the Digital World, is planning to destroy everything.

Fans of the Royal Knights will love this film as they are featured performing exciting battles.

1

Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna

Tai, Matt, TK, and Izzy holding Agumon, Gabumon, Patamon, and Tentomon respectively.

The biggest appeal of Digimon is not only nostalgia but the fact that most fans of the series are now full-grown adults and that the series ages up its characters to grow up along with its fans. Last Evolution Kizuna is a heartwrenching film where the DigiDestined have to save the world one more time while juggling their adult responsibilities and prospects in life.

If you think that sounds like a huge reality check, then you’ll be right. If you don’t walk away from this movie in full streaming tears, then there might be something wrong with you.
