Summary
- Analysts have predicted Nintendo is prepared to sell as many as 20 million Switch 2 consoles during its first year.
- That’s based on preparations Nintendo has made to the Switch 2’s supply chain.
- By comparison, the original Nintendo Switch sold just shy of 15 million units during its first year.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is coming. Nintendo has confirmed it and will reveal more about its next console on April 2. Between now and then we can go back to predicting what the future might hold for Nintendo and the Switch 2. Industry analysts are among the best to listen to when it comes to those sorts of predictions, and the latest from them is that Nintendo has everything in place to sell as many as 20 million Switch 2 consoles during its first year.
That’s according to analyst Robin Zhu who also told Bloomberg that they expect the Switch 2 to be released in June. Nintendo will hold hands-on events with the Switch 2 around the world starting on April 4 through to June 1, so a release later that month would make sense. As for the 20 million figure, that’s all down to the supply chain network Nintendo has in place ready for what could be its biggest console launch yet.

That looks a lot like a new, better-looking Mario Kart game to us.
By comparison, the Nintendo Switch, which is closing in on 150 million lifetime sales as we approach its eighth anniversary, sold 15 million units during its first year. That presumably means the idea behind having the capability to manufacture and sell 20 million Switch 2 consoles during the new system’s first year is to make sure everyone who wants one gets one, and no one will have to resort to buying a Switch 2 for an inflated price from scalpers.
Nintendo Is Prepared To Sell As Many As 20 Million Switch 2s During Its First Year
Hopefully That Means Anyone Who Wants One Can Get One
Most wondering how difficult it’s going to be to get a Switch 2 during its first year will have lived through the console shortages of 2021. An increased interest in gaming and a worldwide semiconductor shortage, both of which were caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, made PS5s very hard to find during its launch year.
Even though the Switch was three years old by the time the pandemic hit, its sales also went through the roof. The fiscal year ending in March 2021 remains the Switch’s strongest year with almost 30 million of them sold worldwide. While Nintendo would love the Switch 2 to perform that well, without a pandemic leading non-gamers to pick up a console and give it a whirl, 20 million feels like a safe bet to make sure supply meets demand during year one.
These are all predictions for now, and even if these predictions are correct, it doesn’t mean there will immediately be 20 million Switch 2 consoles available the second pre-orders go live. The console will almost certainly sell out everywhere on day one, and some of us might need to sit tight and suffer a little bit of FOMO out the gate. Don’t worry though, those who want one will be able to get one eventually.
