Summary
- Nintendo’s share prices fall following the Switch 2 reveal.
- It’s being reported that investors were disappointed by the reveal not giving us more details.
- However, share prices had risen before the reveal, as details were leaking online.
At long last, Nintendo revealed the successor to the Switch yesterday. As we all suspected, it’s called the Switch 2 and will be backwards compatible with games from its predecessor.
However, we didn’t see much. The trailer was only a little under two and a half minutes long, giving us a look at the console, the Joy-Cons, as well as a brief glimpse of what appears to be a new Mario Kart game. More will be shown off during a Nintendo Direct in April, but for now, it seems that many were disappointed that we didn’t see more.
Nintendo Share Prices Take A Hit After The Switch 2 Reveal
It’s reported that the reveal has “underwhelmed”, despite the hype for the console
This comes from the Wall Street Journal, who reports that the reveal was “disappointing” to investors, due to its lack of specifics – likely games and a firm release date – as well as the fact that it’s so similar to the Switch. As a result, share prices fell as much as 7.2 percent after the reveal, closing at -4.26.
Indeed, sticking with a similar naming convention is not what we would have expected from Nintendo in the past. There have been exceptions to this, like the DS line of consoles, but after the failure of the Wii U, some assumed Nintendo would avoid doing this again. However, throwing a 2 in there does do a good job of communicating that this is a new console, potentially avoiding the confusion with the Wii U, and the reveal did also state that some games would be exclusive to Switch 2.
It’s also worth remembering that share prices increased in the run-up to the Switch 2’s reveal, especially in recent weeks. We can likely expect them to rise again once we have more information, which is coming in just a few months.
We also know that the Switch 2 is launching this year. We might not have an exact date, but we will have our hands on it at some point in 2025.
Nintendo Switch 2
The Nintendo Switch 2 is the successor to Nintendo Switch, scheduled for release in 2025. Confirmed as backwards compatible, it will play both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. A full reveal is pencilled in for April 2, 2025.
