Per Variety, Gerwig’s bid to have Netflix break with tradition and let the project be released in theaters has succeeded in a big way. The report confirms that the upcoming Chronicles of Narnia reboot will not only get a nationwide theatrical release in line with Gerwig’s request but will do so exclusively in IMAX theaters as part of a landmark agreement between the companies. This theatrical run will get a two-week headstart on the film’s debut for streaming on Netflix, getting double the amount of time the streamer afforded to Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’s theatrical run.

Gerwig’s star power is evident in this decision from Netflix, who have previously been content to miss out on bidding for hot new projects when creators insisted on any sort of theatrical run before hitting the streamer. While there are only a couple hundred IMAX locations in the US (preventing Gerwig’s upcoming release from setting a record at Netflix despite debuting nationwide), the comparatively more enjoyable experience is sure to be a boon for the film. With fantast adaptations, visuals can make or mar a project, and being able to leave a first impression with IMAX will go a long way to make the experience stick with viewers. Better yet, this first contact will be great for word of mouth, which is a major driver of viewership on streaming platforms. While there was a bit of unease from the fanbase when it was stated that Gerwig’s Chronicles Of Narnia would offer a new take on the beloved franchise from the 1950s, this new deal will give the film every advantage to sell audiences on its direction.

With a chance to really impress viewers with an IMAX release, it’s important that Gerwig and Netflix keep the lessons that their Chronicles of Narnia reboot can learn from other fantasy franchises firmly in mind to improve on the issues that the last adaptation had. With a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work, the franchise could finally live up to its latent potential and see all seven installments of the book series adapted for a new generation of kids and adults alike.
