Beyond the massive success of its toy line, the LEGO game franchise remains one of the most popular in gaming. Thanks largely to its incredible cross-promotional potential with the use of popular IPs and its appeal to gamers of all ages, LEGO video games are always in demand. Developer TT Games in particular has proven that with its line of LEGO games, though other developers have started to jump in, notably with the recent LEGO Horizon Adventures.
As LEGO games continue to move in new directions and feature new developers, there is plenty of room for this brand to expand to different styles of games. LEGO video games already lay a great foundation for new features and ideas in the future, and they’re built to play well off of current industry trends. It Takes Two Has Sparked A Co-Op Revolution
The LEGO brand would be the perfect place for a mandatory co-op game akin to something like It Takes Two. Released by Hazelight Studios under the EA Originals brand in 2021, It Takes Two was a platformer-adventure game that was co-op-only and offered no single-player option. It succeeded to such a huge degree that it ended up winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2021.
Recently, the success of this game has seemed to spark a massive rise in major co-op games. The Game Awards 2024 proved that, as a couple of different major co-op titles were announced during the show. Beyond Hazelight’s own next project Split Fiction – set for release this March – gamers were also treated to Stage Fright, a new co-op title from Ghost Town Games, the development team behind the Overcooked! series.
LEGO Games Are Well Known For Their Co-Op Fun
With this sudden rise of co-op-mandatory titles – or “It Takes Two-Likes” – LEGO would be the perfect franchise to follow suit. After all, previous LEGO games have had a longstanding history of offering two-player co-op, being one of the most appealing aspects of the game. With the franchise’s all-ages appeal and pick-up-and-play nature, these titles are a treasure trove for players looking for excellent co-op gaming no matter how hardcore their gaming habits are.
LEGO could also bounce off of one other element that made It Takes Two so special: the gameplay roulette. It Takes Two succeeded by blending several different gameplay styles and genres while never losing focus on itself, making for a game that was charming and clever at every turn. Given that the LEGO brand has seen success in several genres and has been attempting new genre switch-ups lately, there’s a perfect avenue for an “It Takes Two-Like” in the LEGO lineup.

LEGO Could Even Pull From It Takes Two’s Story
It’s worth pointing out that It Takes Two’s overall visual design and concept – two humans being turned into dolls and traveling through toy worlds – also feels like something LEGO can pull from. As LEGO is a toy brand, the games already feature self-aware moments that play on the fact that gamers play as toy characters in a toy world. Thus, the LEGO brand is ripe for a game akin to It Takes Two where human characters enter a toy world.
The success of It Takes Two and the subsequent announcement of new co-op-mandatory projects show that gamers may be in for a proper wave of “It Takes Two-Like” titles. With so much shared DNA already, there’s no better franchise than LEGO to play off of this trend and provide more co-op fun. Perhaps LEGO should be taking notes from Hazelight’s game when crafting some of its next titles.
