Game of Thrones: Kingsroad first impression

I played Netmarble‘s Game of Thrones: Kingsroad during Closed Beta Testing and to my surprise, it turned out to be much better than I expected. From the nostalgic music to the immersive storyline, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad has completely nailed it, and here’s what I’m going to share in my first impression.

The game finally got a playable build after exactly three years of its announcement. While the CBT remains active for a couple of days, you can download GOT Kingsroad and experience it yourself on your Android device.

The original Game of Thrones flavour in a new shape

If you’ve missed the world of Westeros, this game might just pull you right back into the action. Right from the start, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad hits you with that nostalgic vibe. The music, the atmosphere, and even the plot feel like they’re straight out of the original series.

You start with House Tyre, a house in the seven kingdoms created particularly for this game. As a huge fan of the series, I have to say, the storyline feels authentic. It’s like they’ve captured the essence of George R.R. Martin’s world.

Even in this beta version, the immersion is real. Every dialogue and every cutscene screams ‘Game of Thrones.’ The characters you interact with feel true to the lore, and the narrative structure has the potential to rival some of the best RPGs out there. You get to meet Jon Snow within the first thirty minutes.

However, since it’s still in beta, some scenes feel a bit rushed, and there’s room for improvement in how the story connects with gameplay elements. There are some cases where it does not have a voice over and sometimes the lipsync is bad. But overall, the foundation is strong.

A few things are unpolished and need serious attention

In my first impression, the Combat in Game of Thrones: Kingsroad feels a little unpolished at the moment. While the game introduces combos and abilities you can chain together, the execution feels clunky.

For example, transitioning between attacks lacks the fluidity we’ve come to expect in modern mobile games. Sometimes, you’ll find yourself spamming a move only for it to feel disconnected from the action on screen. The animations, while decent, don’t convey the weight or intensity of battles, which can be immersion-breaking.

The general graphics on mobile also need some serious attention. I played in OnePlus 12R with the High settings and I have also seen the graphics on PC. I see a significant difference between these two. With the cross-play facility built to let the players have fun together, Netmarble should work on improving the mobile graphics before it pushes the global launch.

Exploration is another aspect worth mentioning. The map is massive and while the game offers a variety of areas to traverse, the movement mechanics can feel stiff, making it harder to fully appreciate the detailed environments.

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad brings full-fledged RPG experience

The game offers an impressive array of options and intricate systems, showcasing its depth and complexity. However, newcomers to RPGs or those unfamiliar with the genre might find it challenging at first. The sheer number of systems can feel overwhelming initially, but this complexity adds to the game’s long-term appeal.

From skill trees and abilities to equipment customization and more, the variety ensures there’s plenty to explore. You may need at least a week to fully grasp all the mechanics the game has to offer. For mobile gamers, this has the potential to be an excellent title, if Netmarble ensures proper optimization for the global launch.

So, that’s my first impression of Game of Thrones: Kingsroad. Considering this is a closed beta, there’s a good chance these rough edges will be addressed before the official launch. If you’re a GOT fan, I’d say it’s worth keeping an eye on this one.
