Summary
- Several characters like Ricardo Irving and Jake Muller harbor intense hatred towards Chris for their own personal reasons.
- Even seemingly heroic characters like Ethan Winters develop strong disdain for Chris due to misunderstandings.
- Iconic rivals like Albert Wesker despise Chris for repeatedly thwarting their evil plans, leading to a deep-seated hatred.
Chris Redfield has been one of Resident Evil‘s main protagonists since the very first entry in the series, but while many players have come to love the boulder-punching B.S.A.A agent over the years, not everyone in the Resident Evil universe is as fond of him. In fact, there are a fair few characters who don’t just dislike, but downright hate Chris for one reason or another, as difficult as that might seem given his infectious charisma and good-guy persona.

Resident Evil: 8 Games That Don’t Have Safe Rooms
Despite being a tradition within the series, some Resident Evil games leave safe rooms out entirely, ramping up the tension of the gameplay.
The truth is though, Chris is a complex character who has made plenty of enemies throughout his adventures in the series, so while many people see him as a hero, others would love nothing more than to see him be crushed by a Tyrant.

Before Wesker is revealed as the main villain of Resident Evil 5‘s story, Chris and Sheva are tasked with chasing down a black market weapons dealer known as Irving. This cowardly accomplice of Excella’s is always getting irritated by the fact that Chris manages to catch up to him so easily, forcing him to run away each and every time and jeopardizing his position within the ranks.
When Chris and Sheva confront Irving on a cruise ship, Irving even comments that the two of them are making him “look bad”, and ponders why Chris and his new companion aren’t already dead considering all they’ve been through. Irving was promised a mountain of cash by Excella for his efforts, but by getting in the way of that, Chris ended up becoming despised by Irving over the course of the game.

This is specifically referring to Ethan in Resident Evil Village who, for the majority of the game, hates Chris for what he did to ‘Mia’, Ethan’s wife, during the first few moments of the story. After barging into Ethan’s home and shooting a helpless Mia, Ethan quickly develops a bubbling hatred towards the man who was supposed to be protecting him and his family, not killing them.

5 Resident Evil Games That Changed The Franchise The Most
The Resident Evil franchise has seen multiple games come out that changed the course of the series, and these titles had the biggest impact.
Because Chris refuses to tell Ethan that the Mia he killed was actually Mother Miranda in disguise, it leads the latter to see Chris as little more than a shady murderer who was acting in his own selfish interest. By the end of Village, after a lengthy and much-needed explanation from Chris, Ethan does eventually understand Chris’ true intentions, but this certainly wasn’t the case for a good bulk of the story, which is what fueled Ethan’s anger towards him.

Weak
Very early on in Jake’s campaign in Resident Evil 6, it’s revealed to players that this rag-tag mercenary is the son of Albert Wesker, who, by this point, had already been blown to smithereens by Chris during the events of the fifth game. While Jake doesn’t seem to have too much respect for his late father, one trait he does share is his less-than-positive view of Chris, which is shown on a few occasions.
When Jake first meets Chris in Edonia, he scowls at him and calls him and his men a “bunch of jarheads”, but it’s when Chris reveals that he was Wesker’s killer that Jake shows his frustration. Upon hearing the news, Jake immediately pulls a handgun to Chris’ face, and though he only narrowly missed his shot, and clearly didn’t have it in him to kill another human being in such a way, the hatred he has for the man who took his father away from him continues to linger.

Admittedly, Chris and Heisenberg are never physically seen together throughout the course of Village, but during the Heisenberg boss fight near the end, the mysterious member of Miranda’s cult slips up and expresses his disdain for Chris in a pretty humorous line. Heisenberg had been building a factory that was designed to create an army of mutants he would eventually use to take down Miranda, so when Chris decides to blow all of his life’s work to pieces, Heisenberg calls him a “boulder-punching a**hole” and swears revenge on him, after he’s finished with Ethan.

Glenn Arias
Glenn’s Rise To The Top Of The Food Chain Would Have Gone Off Without A Hitch…If Not For Chris
- First Appearance: Resident Evil Vendetta (2017)
Glenn Arias, the main antagonist of the Resident Evil Vendetta CG movie, may have been pursued by Chris, Leon, and Rebecca, but it is Chris who first disrupts his plans at the beginning of the movie after finding him at a spooky zombie-infested mansion. Later in the movie, Chris is once again the one who makes the first move on Arias’ safe house, rescuing Rebecca who Arias had kidnapped due to her resembling the appearance of his late wife.
Arias’ last stand on the balcony of the safehouse would also see him doing all he can to fend off Chris, who had more or less chased Aris to the end of the earth in order to put an end to his plan of taking over the world. As a result, it’s understandable why Arias would hold such a grudge against Chris specifically, considering the lengths the B.S.A.A agent went to in order to stop Arias from succeeding in his mission and seeking revenge on the government that ruined his wedding day.

While Wesker may seem cool and collected on the surface, underneath his cold exterior is a burning hatred for the man who ruined his grand scheme during the Spencer Mansion Incident: Chris Redfield. When Wesker shows up in Code Veronica, he specifically tells Chris how much he “despises” him, and shows frustration that his former S.T.A.R.S comrade is besting him yet again.
That wouldn’t be the end of their rivalry though, as Chris would once again thwart Wesker’s plans in Resident Evil 5 after crashing his plane into a volcano. Wesker may mock Chris from time to time, but there have been several moments where the evil mastermind has exposed the true extent of his hatred for the man who always stands in the way of him and his goals. It’s therefore only fitting that Wesker’s final words before losing his life would be Chris’ name, which he screams at the top of his lungs before being beheaded by a rocket.
