The road to liberation won’t be an easy one, with many enemies standing in your way. On top of this, any minor mistakes you make in the game’s hub, the Panopticon, will add years to your prison sentence. Use these tips to dominate the battlefield and start shaving time off your sentence.
Prioritize A Mission’s Main Objective
When you get a mission briefing, it’s incredibly important to pay attention to what the actual objective of your deployment is. As soon as you complete the objective, the mission will end, meaning you won’t need to worry about any extraneous enemies or additional resources you may have been trying to retrieve.
For example, if your mission tasks you with grabbing three citizens and bringing them back to pods for extraction, it may be wise to ignore your foes (as long as they don’t pose an immediate threat) and simply focus on rescuing people. As soon as the third person is brought safely to the pod, the operation is finished, allowing you to earn a faster completion time.
How quickly you finish a mission is one of the factors that determines your performance evaluation, and thus what rewards you earn. It is to your benefit to blaze through encounters as fast as possible.
Use Lock-on To Make The Most Of Your Thorn
One of the mechanics that separates Freedom Wars from other action RPGs is the Thorn. Not only can it be used to acrobatically traverse the environment, but it also provides a handful of combat functions.
After locking on to an Abductor (using the Left Trigger), your targeting circle will be one of three colors. Yellow means that the body part you’ve locked on to can be used to drag the Abductor to the ground, letting you beat them for extra damage. This can be done by mashing the correct button.
If the circle is blue or red, this means you can zip to that part of the Abductor and sever it. After leaping onto the creature with your Thorn, start mashing the button to begin cutting. Severing a blue section will free a citizen inside the creature, allowing you to rescue them, while severing a red section will remove a weapon and reduce enemy combat abilities.
You can cycle which Abductor component you’re locked on to by flicking the Right Stick back and forth.
Donate Some (But Not All) Of Your Rewards
After completing a mission, you’ll be treated to a rewards screen showing all the resources you managed to gather. You will then be given the option to donate some of these items to the Greater Good in order to further reduce your sentence.
While it may be tempting to donate everything in the early game so you can meet CODE Exam requirements, it’s wise to limit yourself. These resources can be used to upgrade your gear, so tossing all of them after each mission may inadvertently prevent you from being able to take on stronger foes. Try to balance your donations so you keep any items you need for yourself even as you work off your sentence.

Purchase Everyday Entitlements
The world of Freedom Wars is a cruel one; stepping out of line can result in extreme punishment, and any inefficiency is viewed as a capital offense. Thus, simple actions like being able to rest or pacing are banned in the Panopticon, and engaging in these illegal activities will result in your sentence increasing.
When you’re first given control of your character, taking five or more steps in your prison cell will get you a ten-year penalty!
Luckily, if you can prove yourself to be a useful Sinner, the reigns will loosen a bit. Completing missions will earn you Entitlement Points, which can be spent on Entitlements, essentially the ability to do many of the previously prohibited actions without being reprimanded.
You should prioritize the Everday Entitlements so you can navigate the Panopticon and interact with NPCs without being given disciplinary notices for basic game mechanics like walking or talking.
Remember To Bring Comrades On Operations
When you are about to depart on a mission, you’re given the opportunity to select comrades you’ll be accompanied by. There are three additional character slots you can fill before an operation begins, allowing you to craft a party you think will help you tackle the objective best.
You can add characters to your roster in the briefing menu.
Your comrades fall into understandable archetypes (DPS, healers, tanks) and will support you in battle as well as revive you should you die. It is very easy to start a mission without filling up your squad, so don’t forget to bring help with you.
Bringing additional characters also lets you utilize Team Orders. After pressing down on the D-pad, you can instruct NPCs to behave in certain ways, such as protecting citizens or focusing attacks on a single target.
Customize Your Gear With Modules
While each of your weapons can be leveled up to increase their base stats, the quickest way to improve them is by equipping them with modules. These are tiny stat boosts that enhance a specific aspect of your game, like damage dealt to a staggered enemy or critical hit chance.
In the early game, modules can be found as rewards for completing quests. Go to the loadout menu and equip them to your weapons so you can reap their benefits on the battlefield. Don’t be afraid to mix and match; modules can be swapped out on every weapon without penalty, letting you experiment and find the right playstyle for you.
Upgrade Your Facilities
If you want to get better combat gear, you need to make sure you’re developing your facilities. The Facility Management menu lets you enhance your loadouts by leveling up weapons, increasing their module slots, imbuing them with elements, and more. The faster you upgrade your facilities, the easier it will be to carve through enemies.
Facilities and facility upgrades can be purchased with Entitlements. Each time you level a facility, it will allow for new actions to be performed, such as manufacturing and synthesizing modules. This way, you’ll be able to craft the exact modules you need instead of relying on RNG mission rewards to improve your character.
Save, And Save Often
Freedom Wars takes a lot of inspiration from Monster Hunter, so you will need to manually save your game. This can be done by interacting with your Accessory in your prison cell. Don’t forget to speak with them and get a save permit before you shut the game off.
A good rule of thumb is to save after every completed operation or story beat. You’ll develop a habit of saving that will hopefully prevent you from losing any significant progress.
