Turf is a resource in Aloft that can be used to craft turf building pieces and cover bare soil. While this resource is actually quite easy to obtain, there is little information about the process to be found in-game. That lack of information may leave some players confused about how to get Turf in Aloft, and this guide is here to alleviate that confusion.
Turf is harvested, not crafted. As such, players should not concern themselves with trying to make Turf, as that is not how the resource is obtained.

Aloft: How to Get Turf
Make a Stone Dorkip
The first step towards getting Turf is crafting a Stone Dorkip, a tool that can be used as both a hoe and a spear. Here are the resources that are used to create a Stone Dorkip, and it can be crafted at a Workbench:
- 2x Wood
- 1x Rope
- 1x Sharp Stone
While players who have completed the game’s first quests will have a solid understanding of how to obtain Wood and Sharp Stone, they may be unclear about the source of Rope. Quite simply, this resource is crafted by combining two Mykter Fibre, which are earned on corrupted islands, and this guide to making Rope in Aloft fully details that process.
Use the Stone Dorkip on Grass
After crafting a Stone Dorkip, players should enter their inventories and assign the tool to the hotbar. Fans of games with flying should then simply use the tool (by pressing LMB or RT) on any section of ground that is covered with grass. Indeed, this action will yield five Turf, and it will remove the grass from the area that was hit.
Aloft: How to Use Turf
As previously mentioned, Turf can be used to create various turf building pieces, including Turf Flat Roofs, Turf Roofs, and Turf Corner Roofs. Players can learn the blueprints from those pieces by visiting islands, finding structures that use them, and sketching them with the Sketchbook. For the uninitiated, the Sketchbook is crafted by combining two Wood, one Piece of Paper, and one Charcoal at a Workbench, and it is a very useful tool for learning how to build objects.
After learning how to build a turf piece, players can place its frame via the Building menu. Fans of sandbox games can then strike that frame with their Hammers, and the Turf will be added to it after only a few strikes.
Players can also use Turf to cover bare patches of soil. To do this, fans of indie survival games should simply confirm that they have some Turf in their inventories, equip the Stone Dorkip, and strike the soil when an orange circle appears on top of it.
