Summary

  • The Until Dawn movie has new characters, setting, and time loop mechanic.
  • The film’s characters experience a time loop where they come back to life after being murdered and must stay alive until dawn to escape.
  • The film adaptation faces backlash for straying from the original game.

The Until Dawn movie’s full trailer has officially arrived and with it comes even more answers about how the film can call itself Until Dawn despite having almost nothing to do with the video game is was thought to be based on back when the project was first announced. The new two and a half minute trailer also gives viewers a better look at the cast and pulls back the curtain a bit more on what exactly the plot is and what the main characters are doing.

The original Until Dawn video game featured cinematic graphics and an adventure game play through that featured a group of college-age friends all getting together at a snow-bound ski lodge years after a tragedy claimed a couple of members of their group. Players had to make decisions based on what characters they were controlling at various points in the story with the end goal making it until morning with the entire group alive. The game had different endings depending on how successful the players were or, for that matter, if they failed completely and everyone died.

Until Dawn’s Time Loop Mechanic Shown Off In Detail

The new Until Dawn movie’s trailer follows up on the teaser that was released earlier this week demonstrating that while the project has the same name as the video game, there’s been quite a few changes, including the fact that the group of characters are all different; and so is the setting.

The new Until Dawn trailer also shows how the movie’s time loop mechanic will work this time around. Main character Clover and her friends head to a creepy old house – which might have at one time served as an inn or a Bed and Breakfast – in search for Clover’s sister who has gone missing. It’s later revealed her sister somehow ended up at the same house, as well as dozens of others who have since gone missing/ were apparently killed by any number of things that go bump in the night.

For our intrepid group of travelers, things start to go very, very wrong once they get settled at the house and find the guestbook, including their car going missing and monsters starting to come out and kill them; one by one once the sun goes down. Soon enough, the group realizes that when they are killed by one of these monsters – including what looks like a giant – they come back to life, only to be killed in more inventive and terrifying ways.

Previously, the film’s writer and director tried to head off the game’s more devoted following who were quite angry about the movie not really using part of the source material by explaining they wanted people to be able to see a brand new adventure rather than just a repeat of the game on the big screen. While that explanation makes sense, it has not stopped plenty of fans on the internet from going so far as to claim the project is an insult to gamers who loved the original Until Dawn. Whether those burned bridges can be repaired by the film’s release in April will be an interestingly storyline to watch.
