This Character Needs To Appear In The Trinity Spin-Off

The Dexter franchise is at the height of its popularity, with the prequel series, Original Sin performing well on Paramount+ with Showtime, and the sequel, Resurrection, in the early stages of filming, with a release date set for this summer. To add to that, The Trinity Killer is also getting a prequel spin-off series, with John Lithgow signed up to narrate the series, and speculation is rife over what other characters could appear.

Special Agent Frank Lundy turns up in Miami in search of the elusive Trinity Killer in the fourth season of the original Dexter series. The elusive killer was Lundy’s ‘white whale’ for many years, so an appearance by a younger version of his character in the Trinity spin-off would make sense and fans would love it.

Frank Lundy Never Caught Trinity But He’d Been Hunting Him For Years, So He Could Feature In The Spin-Off

Frank Lundy was the ‘rock star’ FBI Agent who was brought to Miami to hunt down the Bay Harbor Butcher (a.k.a. Dexter) in the second season of the original series. However, he’d been on the hunt for another unknown serial killer many years before this case arose: The Trinity Killer was given this mantra because he killed his victims in a cycle of three, though ironically, this was actually later revealed to be four. Trinity was Lundy’s ‘one that got away’ and the now retired detective returned to the iconic location of Miami to finally track him down. This poses the important question: what happened during Lundy’s initial investigation and could this play a part in the prequel series?

It was very clear that Lundy’s Trinity investigation was very much off the books, as he reveals to Dexter that he was working on his own hypothesis that wasn’t supported by law enforcement. If Lundy was to appear in the Trinity series, it would have to be without the FBI’s involvement. Obviously, Lundy didn’t end up solving the case and was later shot and killed by Trinity’s daughter, so it’s questionable what role he could actually play in the Trinity series. It would probably have to be a brief cameo, but as Original Sin has proven, this can be very effective.

The Trinity Killer Prequel Could Actually Be A Backdoor Pilot For A Frank Lundy Solo Series

The Dexter-verse is Paramount+ and Showtime’s most profitable asset at the moment, and they are keen to expand exponentially over the next few years with multiple spin-offs. There are crossovers between Original Sin and Resurrection, so it might make sense to also set up the Trinity Killer spin-off, and in turn, Arthur MItchell’s origin story could also be a backdoor pilot for a series based on Frank Lundy. The FBI agent clearly had an interesting past, as when he turned up in Miami to investigate the Bay Harbor Butcher case, he was treated like law enforcement royalty.

Lundy was one of the best side characters in the original Dexter series, so it would be a popular choice to produce a spin-off based on his origin story. It could be an FBI serial killer thriller in the style of Netflix’s Mindhunter. Despite being intrinsically linked to the Dexter-verse, a Lundy-based spin-off could be very much its own thing, while also featuring a few Easter eggs and one of those could be the Trinity killer himself. Lundy could interview serial killers in prison, and use this knowledge to help solve cases.
