The Best Red Cards From The MTG Innistrad Remastered Reprints

Innistrad Remastered is an all-reprint set in Magic: The Gathering. It features cards that were included in any past set that took place on the plane Innistrad, such as Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and Eldritch Moon (as well as a few extra reprints with a new Innistrad coat of paint). Innistrad sets were home to some of the best cards and staples.

Pioneer Masters is looking to bring the Magic: The Gathering Arena format Explorer closer to the paper Pioneer set with these great cards.

The red cards available in Innistrad Remastered include some of the most notable cards in MTG. From eternal format staples to Commander classics, there are a lot of great red cards included in Innistrad Remastered that are worth running in your decks.

10

Abrade

Red’s Utility Staple

MTG Abrade card and art in the background.

Abrade is a frequent sideboard option in red decks, as it helps you to either remove problematic creatures or artifacts that you might struggle against. The best sideboard cards are ones that offer utility, something Abrade offers thanks to having two solid effects. Red hasn’t had a ton of sideboard staples over the years, but Abrade is one of them, primarily in Standard formats.

While far from the most exciting card, the power of Abrade is not to be undervalued. It’s a decently costed removal spell and one that can handle various kinds of permanents in a way that red is best at.

9

Fiery Temper

Burning Madness

MTG Fiery Temper card and art in the background.

Fiery Temper is a card that, outside of desperation, you’ll never actually pay its normal casting cost. Instead, you’ll be paying the madness cost of just one red mana. Dealing three mana to any target is great value at three mana, as it’s a notable amount of burn damage and enough to get rid of a problematic creature.

Fiery Temper is best played in decks that are built around casting various madness spells. Madness is such a strong effect as it turns discarding, something that can be a downside, into extra value with a discounted spell.

8

Thermo-Alchemist

Repeated Burn

MTG Thermo-Alchemist card and art in the background.

In a dedicated burn deck, Thermo-Alchemist is one of the best creatures you can include. It has a decent statline to make it a solid blocker, but the main attraction is the ability to untap itself to let you reuse its other ability to burn for one damage by tapping it.

There are some cases where Thermo-Alchemist is the only creature in the deck. While the one damage isn’t a ton by itself, when you’re mixing it with other burn spells, Thermo-Alchemist can snowball to well over five damage in just one turn, if not more.

7

Ancestral Anger

Boost And Draw

MTG Ancestral Anger card and art in the background.

Ancestral Anger is a card that does a whole lot for just one mana. Pump spells that replace themselves in the hand by drawing the card are fantastic, and Ancestral Anger gives more stats the more copies of it are in the graveyard.

Ancestral Anger frequently pops up in aggressive decks that want to target creatures with spells, such as Heroic decks in Pauper and Pioneer. Since Ancestral Anger gives a creature trample as well as a stat boost, it pairs especially well with other pump spells for large outbursts of damage that can trample over blockers.

6

Voldaren Epicure

Burn’s Best Friend

Voldaren Epicure is a staple of burn decks in Pioneer and Pauper and was an all-star in the Standard it was legal in. For just one mana you get a bit of burn damage as well as a Blood token you can utilize later.

The Blood token is especially good, as burn decks can stall out with cards they can’t do anything with. The Blood tokens let you cycle a useless card away to find another burn spell. It also pairs well with madness cards, and it makes it easy to trigger them at instant speed.

5

Through The Breach

Bring The Eldrazi Through

MTG Through the Breach card and art in the background.

Through the Breach is the perfect way to cheat out a large creature, and giving it haste lets you take advantage of any effect it might have when it attacks. It’s most often played in decks that can ramp into it quickly, most notably Eldrazi Breach decks in Modern, and pops up in niche Sneak and Show builds in Legacy.

Through the Breach is the perfect way to take advantage of enter the battlefield triggers. Although the creature dies at the end step, the creatures you cheat out with Through the Breach are often winning the game that turn anyway.

4

Mass Hysteria

With Haste

MTG Mass Hysteria card and art in the background.

Mass Hysteria is one of the few cards in Innistrad Remastered that wasn’t actually a part of an Innistrad set prior, being originally released in Mirrodin. The card hadn’t seen a proper non-List reprint until its Innistrad Remastered version.

From D&D to Monty Python to Marvel, Magic: The Gathering’s 2024 Secret Lair Drops were entertaining and fun. But which ones were the best?

Mass Hysteria has a very simple effect that gives all creatures haste. It enables all creatures to attack right away, including your opponents. There are a few ways to shut this off, but often, the downside of giving your opponents’ creatures haste is worth it to give your own creatures haste as your deck is more likely to be built around it.

3

Zealous Conscripts

Tapping And Untapping

MTG Zealous Conscripts card and art in the background.

Zealous Conscripts’ effect to untap a target permanent when it enters is what makes it so good. While the effect makes it seem like the best choice is an opponent’s powerful permanent, the best target is actually your own. Zealous Conscripts is primarily used to untap a creature that can create a copy of itself.

Zealous Conscripts is most often used with Splinter Twin and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker as this can create an infinite number of Zealous Conscript tokens that can attack the turn they enter and deal an infinite amount of damage to win the game on the spot.

2

Balefire Dragon

Dragon Brings The Burn

MTG Balefire Dragon card and art in the background.

Balefire Dragon is unique in Innistrad Remastered as it only comes in the retro frame treatment. As for the card itself, it is a fantastic Dragon that will deal a minimum of six damage by default to all your opponent’s creatures that you dealt damage to.

Balefire Dragon’s effect doesn’t look at its base stats, so when combined with other cards that boost stats, it’s not uncommon for Balefire Dragon to lead to full, one-sided board wipes. There is no shortage of Dragon support cards in Magic, making the task that much easier.

1

Faithless Looting

Red’s Iconic Draw Spell

MTG Faithless Looting card and art in the background.

Faithless Looting is one of, if not the most iconic draw cards in all of Magic, and one of red’s most iconic spells as well (only behind Lightning Bolt). Its effect is simple: draw two cards, then discard two. You can also flash it back for three mana to get extra value later.

Faithless Looting enables a ton of strategies, from madness to reanimator to spellslinger. With the exception of Vintage, it sees a ton of play in every format where Faithless Looting is legal. It’s one of the most powerful red cards ever printed with one of the most basic effects.
