Nintendo has finally revealed the Switch 2 and seemingly confirmed that the console’s Joy-Cons will have mouse-like functionality. Rumors have been swirling about the follow-up to 2017’s smash-hit hybrid system for months now, and the official reveal trailer has proved that many of them were true. One of the biggest takeaways from the Switch 2 announcement is that users may be able to use their Joy-Cons like a computer mouse — something not seen from Nintendo since the SNES.
The trailer for the Switch 2 dropped on January 16 and largely confirmed things many fans already expected from the console thanks to numerous leaks beforehand. Still, there’s some room for interpretation about some of the visuals in the reveal, particularly when it comes to the Joy-Cons. It doesn’t explicitly state that the controllers do, in fact, have mouse functionality, but it does hint at it.

Nintendo Switch 2 Is Backward Compatible, But There’s a Catch
Nintendo finally reveals the Switch 2, offering details on how the console’s backward compatibility works, though it comes with a catch.
Roughly halfway through the first-look trailer, the video shows two Joy-Cons gliding attachments side-down across a flat surface. It’s a brief segment, and it doesn’t show any corresponding on-screen action, but the movement makes the most sense as a demonstration of the controllers working like a computer mouse. Previous rumors suggested the Switch 2 would be able to mimic mouse functionality, as customs manifests mentioned the same kind of protective tape manufacturers typically use when shipping computer mice. Leaked images also showed what many thought might be optical sensors on the side of the Joy-Con shown sliding face-down in the trailer.
Nintendo Switch 2 Trailer Seemingly Confirms Joy-Con Mouse Functionality
Mouse-like functionality for the Joy-Cons isn’t the only rumor Nintendo confirmed in the trailer. In late 2024, leakers claimed the Switch 2 would have magnetic Joy-Cons and a U-shaped kickstand, both of which appear in the official announcement. The mysterious “C” button below the home option on the right Joy-Con, a larger screen, an additional USB-C port on top of the console, and new buttons on the back of the controllers also popped up in the trailer. All around, the system looks a lot like leaks and rumors said it would.
If the new Joy-Con function is what it looks like in the video, the Switch 2 wouldn’t be alone in that feature. The recently unveiled Lenovo Legion GO has a controller with mouse-like controls that detaches from the console much like Nintendo’s Joy-Cons do. As for what the Switch 2’s specs look like, fans will likely have to wait until the April 2 Direct to learn more.
