Star Wars has seen a lot of the Disney+ era’s marquee characters make the jump from animation to live action, and now one major character from another medium is rumored to be next in line to get the same sort of treatment.
Star Wars has long been a multimedia franchise, but the advent of the Disney era launched the franchise into overdrive with bigger budget games, books, comics, and merchandising, all geared towards filling the gaps that the new stewards created by getting rid of the bulk of Star Wars lore. With all sorts of interesting stories across books, comics, board and video games, and web projects all condemned to the Legends canon, one standout project that’s done a lot to fill in the blanks has been the Star Wars Jedi video game series. It’s even been said that Cal Kestis might just be the Starkiller for this generation of Star Wars fans, and that’s not a comparison that can be made lightly.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor receives a new patch for January 2025, which should improve the gameplay experience for some players.
The final installment in the Star Wars Jedi trilogy is currently in development, but is so far off that there’s no release window as of yet. Since the release and initial run of the last game in the series, Star Wars fans have been wondering what’s next For Cal Kestis, and a recent rumor offers up an answer that will certainly excite fans of the games. According to well-known source Daniel Richtman on Patreon, Lucasfilm has internally greenlit bringing the character of Cal Kestis into the current Star Wars canon via one of the many upcoming live-action projects. There are no details as of yet, as nothing has been set in stone at this point in the process, but there’s a ton of initial speculation about what could be coming. Fan theories have long proposed links between Cal and Ahsoka, the most recent headliner for the DIsney+ franchise.
This has long been a wish for fans of the game series and is one of the more easily cast fan requests out there. Thanks to the source material being a video game and Kestis being modeled almost one-to-one after actor Cameron Monaghan (who also provides the voice for the character), one major step in getting the character into live-action pretty much sorts itself out. It’s long been rumored that Cal Kestis could be getting his own Disney+ show, and now that potential project is back on the table. However, it seems more likely that the character is worked into one of the franchise’s many confirmed and early-dev projects to really tie in with the rest of the larger live-action narrative. Alternatively, adapting the events of the game could be a great opportunity to take a tried and true storyline to the big screen. While Monaghan’s current age could be a barrier to adapting Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, there are certainly ways around that, both tech-wise and narratively.
While Disney has already missed tons of good opportunities to debut the character in live-action, fans will no doubt agree that it’s better late than never to adapt a beloved character. With multiple big Star Wars projects still in view and even more down the line set in the right time frame for Cal to make his appearance, there’s a ton of potential for both solo and crossover adventures within the Star Wars universe. Side characters and even antagonists from the games could also make the jump and really enrich the roster of the Disney+ shows and maybe even make the jump to future theatrical releases.
The Star Wars franchise is available to stream on Disney+.
