Squid Game Season 2 received an intense backlash in one of South Korea’s neighboring countries.
Jung-jae and Byung-hun were featured in the most recent episode of First We Feast’s Hot Ones Versus. The pair ask each other questions and have two options — “tell the truth or suffer the wrath of the last dab.” Whoever consumes most of the spicy wings loses. The two shook each other’s hands while calling each other “Player 456” and “Front Man.” Then, they played rock, paper, and scissors to determine who would spin the bottle and ask the first question. During the game, Jung-jae asked his co-star about the numerous rumors regarding the series. “Squid Game Season 2 ends with a cliffhanger, and fans are already speculating about the next season. Tell me which of the following fan theories are true — the island is a ship, Gi-hun is the son of Oh Il-nam, Front Man is an undercover cop.” Byung-hun visibly wants to win the game. So, instead of eating wings, he answered the question. “Honestly, none were correct,” Byung-hun said.
However, Jung-jae told his co-star to eat while laughing. Byung-hun argued that it was not the game’s mechanics. However, the director supported Jung-jae. The latter said, “You essentially refused to answer!” Byung-hun appeared confused and told them, “So that means that I have to spoil the ending to Season 3 right here?” he asked while Jung-jae continued to laugh. However, Byung-hun was determined to win the game. “I mean, if that’s what you want, I’ll choose that instead,” Byung-hun continued. Jung-jae suggested that Byung-hun just eat the spicy wing, so they could move on from the question. Jung-jae also jokingly reminded his co-star that he might need to “take another look at your contract” because Byung-hun appeared ready to answer. “The ending for Season 3 is…Front Man will.. to your character…will take off his mask and say ‘I’m your father.’ [Laughs] I’m so sorry,” Byung-hun said before taking a bite at the spicy wings on his plate.
Based on Jung-jae’s response, Byung-hun’s answer about the rumors may not be accurate and has some ties to Squid Game Season 3‘s ending. Byung-hun obviously just joked about his character, the Front Man, being Gi-hun’s father because they are about the same age. Also, his earlier responses may not be accurate because he eventually eats the spicy wing. However, it might not be outright wrong too. Oh, Ilnam is Player 001 in Season 1, and he sparks theories he could be Gi-hun’s father when he mentions that his son didn’t drink plain milk like Gi-hun. In Season 2, Byung-hun’s Front Man joins the deadly game as Player 001, and he also doesn’t drink regular milk. This sparks another round of theories that Oh Il-nam’s son could actually be Hwang-Inho, the Front Man, and not Gi-hun. Also, Oh Ilnam and Hwang-Inho are involved in the game and joined the tournament as both Player 001. So, they are more likely the father and son.
Squid Game Season 2 is streaming on Netflix, and Season 3 will be released in 2025.
