These levels are the best we got in Sonic Adventure.
The most recent film, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, introduced Shadow the Hedgehog to the series and had a story inspired by that of Sonic Adventure 2, the debut video game of the black hedgehog. With production of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 under way, there are opportunities for several other iconic legacy characters to make their live-action debut. These are some of the most highly requested and likely future additions to the film series.
A Brand-New Nemesis For The Blue Blur
First Appearance |
Sonic CD (1993) |
---|
Shadow is not the first evil counterpart to Sonic to be introduced in the video game series. Predating him by several years is Metal Sonic, a Sonic-resembling robot created by Dr. Eggman. Introduced in 1993’s Sonic CD, Metal Sonic is first seen kidnapping Amy Rose. This leads the Blue Blur on a mission to save both Amy and defeat both Eggman and the evil robot.
The character would continue to appear in various Sonic video games since then, with his most notable role being as the main villain in 2003’s Sonic Heroes, disguising himself as Eggman to lure the heroes out. With Dr. Robotnik presumed dead following the events of Sonic 3, Metal Sonic is the perfect new villain to take his place, and following the plot of Heroes could give Jim Carrey the opportunity to appear one final time as Sonic’s arch-enemy. The post-credits scene of the movie teases his involvement in the fourth movie when Sonic is attacked by a swarm of Metal Sonic robots.

Big The Cat
A Giant Source of Comic Relief
First Appearance |
Sonic Adventure (1998) |
---|
Big The Cat debuted in 1998’s Sonic Adventure, as a laid-back but not-too-bright cat who loves sleeping and fishing. In the game, his pet frog Froggy goes missing, and Big’s search for his lost friend ultimately has him cross paths with Dr. Eggman and the mysterious Chaos. Big was an extremely polarizing character in Sonic Adventure, with many players disliking his dim-witted personality and finding his unique gameplay mechanic of fishing for Froggy out of place in the game.
Since then, Big’s role has been severely reduced, and he has mostly been a joke character in his future appearances. His biggest appearance since his debut was in Sonic Heroes, as the powerhouse on Team Rose alongside Amy and Cream, serving as a big brother figure to the two girls. While a role like that is possible in the films, the limited amount of screen time he’d likely get means he’d be more likely to be used for comic relief.

Team Chaotix
The Goofball Detectives Could Be On Sonic’s Case
First Appearance |
Knuckles Chaotix (1995) |
---|
Originally debuting in the spin-off game Knuckles Chaotix, Team Chaotix was re-introduced in Sonic Heroes as a private investigative agency. Consisting of Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, and Charmy Bee, the trio were hired by what was presumably Dr. Eggman to do tasks he assigned to them. They then learn that they were unwitting pawns in Metal Sonic’s scheme, and team up with the rest of the Sonic gang to stop the world-conquering robot.

Bringing the Chaotix into the fold could give Sonic and friends a new obstacle, as this trio embodies the trope often seen in media where goofy cop characters are in pursuit of the heroes, only to end up aligned with them against a mutual enemy. As an added bonus, the writers may sneak in Vector’s famous line from Shadow the Hedgehog: “Find the computer room!”

E-123 Omega
Not All Robots Are Evil
First Apperance |
Sonic Heroes (2003) |
---|
One of the many powerful E-100 robots designed by Dr. Eggman, E-123 Omega was introduced in Sonic Heroes as a partner to Shadow and Rouge in Team Dark. Like his brothers, Omega originally started out as a mindless killing machine who carried out Eggman’s orders, but like E-102 Gamma before him, he would defy his programming and emerge as an ally against evil.
With Dr. Robotnik gone after the third Sonic film, an interesting angle the movies could explore is what happened to his robots in his absence. We’re already seeing a hint of that with the introduction of Metal Sonic as a new villain, and Omega could explore the other side of the story. He could also provide Shadow a new ally, like he’s been in the games.
4
Rouge The Bat
Shadow Could Get A New Friend
First Appearance |
Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) |
---|
Rouge the Bat debuted alongside Shadow in Sonic Adventure 2, but she did not appear in the most recent movie despite taking inspiration from that game. In most of her appearance, she is portrayed as a treasure-hunting rival to the gang, in particular Knuckles. Some games, including her debut, have teased an enemies-to-lovers story between her and the red echidna. In Sonic Heroes, she is the leader of Team Dark, alongside a resurrected Shadow the Hedgehog and the robot E-123 Omega.
After missing the first three films, Sonic 4 could be the perfect opportunity to introduce the treasure-hunting spy. Rouge can be introduced as a new ally of Shadow when the character is re-introduced, taking inspiration from Sonic Heroes, which could allow the loner hedgehog to grow as a character. In addition, there is the potential for funny interactions between her and Knuckles similar to those in Sonic Adventure 2.
3
Blaze The Cat
A Fan Favorite From Another Dimension… Or Time
First Appearance |
Sonic Rush (2005) |
---|
Blaze The Cat was introduced in Sonic Rush, a 2005 Nintendo DS game that marked the Blue Blur’s debut on the handheld system. Blaze originates from an alternate dimension to Sonic, with their own equivalent to the Chaos Emeralds called the Sol Emeralds and an alternate version of Dr. Eggman known as Eggman Nega. When the two Eggmen are each able to steal the other universe’s Emeralds, Sonic and Blaze team up to restore them to their rightful dimensions.

She is reintroduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 as a friend of Silver the Hedgehog from the bad future he comes from. Because Rush and 2006 are set in alternate and contradictory continuities, it’s likely that any Blaze appearance will follow only one of them, if they do so at all. Following Rush’s storyline would probably be better for her as a character, as she shines more in that game, whereas she’s largely overshadowed by the three hedgehogs in Sonic 2006.
2
Silver The Hedgehog
An Unlikely Ally From The Future
First Appearance |
Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) |
---|
If the Sonic movies are to strictly follow the stories of specific games in the series, then Silver is unlikely to appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, as he was not featured in any game revolving around Metal Sonic. However, a more loose adaptation of multiple elements of the series would make it possible for him to show up.
Silver’s role in the movies could be similar to that of Trunks in Dragon Ball, a character who many argue is the inspiration for Silver. Similarly to how Trunks is a time traveler sent to warn the main characters about the Android threat, Silver could come from a future where Metal Sonic rules over a robot dystopia, and has to work with Sonic and his friends to defeat Metal Sonic to prevent the bad future from happening. Given the time travel themes of Metal Sonic’s debut game, Sonic CD, this is a strong possibility.
1
Amy Rose
Sonic’s Lover Could Play An Important Role
First Appearance |
Sonic CD (1993) |
---|
As the love interest of Sonic the Hedgehog, Amy has been a core player of the Sonic series ever since her debut in Sonic CD. A precocious girl with a crush on Sonic, she is kidnapped by Metal Sonic in her debut game, Sonic CD, forcing the Blue Blur to come to her rescue. In her debut appearance at the end of the third film, she turns the tables by saving the heroes from being attacked by a swarm of Metal Sonic.
Amy has long moved past her original role as a damsel in distress, and the movie will offer a great opportunity to showcase how much she has grown as a character. With her trusty Piko-Piko Hammer, Amy could become an official member of the main Sonic Team alongside Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. A romantic plot between her and Sonic is also likely to be a major part of the fourth film.
